Quick Texas question!
I have a friend (from here in Florida) in Texas doing some insurance adjusting, and he will be over there at least until the end of the year. Needless to say, people can tend to be aggressive when told that they are not covered, so he is borrowing a .22 pistol, but he can only keep it in the car. He does not have a CWL here in Florida, and he wanted me to find out if he could get a Texas license and what it entailed. He wants to get the Florida permit when he can (and a better handgun). I've been telling him over and over to get it, now he needs it (I told him so!).
So, is he eligible for a license in Texas? If so, what does he need to do? From what I understand, he needs a shooting test (by who?), written test (70% or better), and the typical fingerprints, picture, application, and some kind of fee. I heard that the waiting period was pretty backed up as well. Is he better off just trying to get a Florida license?
Thanks.

You or he can go and look at the eligibility requirements for a non resident.
It is General Code 411.173
The wait time is long, possibly 180 days. He would probably be better off getting his FL license, if you ask me.
The application process is directly after that section in 411.174.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Thanks guys. I just did a third search and found some more info. I think I'll try steering him towards a Florida license. Thanks!

If he's a FL resident, the easy way to to get a FL license - TX honors it, and he won't have to deal with the whole non-resident thing.

Is this hard to understand? Then why does it get unintelligible to some people when 5 little words are changed?

Silly me, I'd say he can write up details on the scene then pretend to check with the home office to see if things will be covered. Maybe send the bad news in a letter..... ?

This friend wouldn't be doing his adjusting in Galveston, would he?

I get sent in to the places that the adjusters don't like to go, like New Orleans and other nasty places. If asked about coverage I must honestly say that is up to the insurance guy:)

No, I believe he is in Harrison County. I told him to stay out of Travis and Harrison because they don't seem to be friendly to guns in cars. So much for that, now he really wishes he'd gotten his CWL.

I'll see if he can do that.

Only a .22 pistol? I'm thinking if he tells too many people they aren't covered he will need a little more than that.
I hope all goes well though, sucks all around when this happens.

Yeah, he's the "dumb" friend, LOL. I'm now helping him through the application process. He is using my P22 loaded with CCI Stingers and his wife (here at home) is borrowing my H&R Topper 20ga. Sometimes I think they just use me. . .
He didn't have any problems with the gun at the airport, but his luggage was too heavy, so he had to transfer some stuff into his carry-on. Didn't realize he put two pocket knives in it
. They "let" him know.
Ah, the irony. He's been eligible to get a license for almost a year and has put it off until now it is biting him in the butt. Not like me. I got my pistol three days after my 21st birthday and went to the first CWL class available.
Anybody know the price range/location for a basic NRA firearm safety class around his area?
