    Colleges and Ghettos ?

    Hi All
Had to ask what is the deal ? Went to get my life time hunting license up at the wildlife dept which is now located on NC States Centinial Campus , I decided since im going on a college campus to leave my 45 at the house since it aint legal here to carry on campus. So im off and make one wrong turn ,trying to get there and end up straight into ghetto im driving wifes mini-van with GPS on dash which by now im beating and it is the seen out of National Lampons Family vacation. Windows up Doors locked reaching but [Edited] its not there thats right left at home . Called wildlife dept to get directions and there like your where get out of there!! 2 blocks latter im on campus..
Then go same night to have dinner with daughter who goes to ECU and same story wow not 2 campus in a row!!

I could be wrong but I think in Texas you can carry with a CHL on campus, but you can not go into any buildings. I'm not 100% but I believe thats what my CHL instructor said.

I know for a fact that you are not allowed to carry on any college campus except for a few in colorodo and another state near by. I am part of a group that is trying to get this rule reversed.

Parking lot only. It is not specified. Not something to be a test case for. Why would you hang around outside the campus anyway?

To the post-er: Next time bring pistol and leave it in the car. Get a little gun safe if you worry about theft. Also, just because your in the ghetto doesn't mean your going to get shot, just stay alert. I do know how you feel, I go to campus twice a week for school and have to disarm<sigh>. Ironically, it's the only time I am ever at the mercy of criminals...

I have never seen an official ruling on this but most people interpret that in SC you can have your gin in your car on a college campus as long as the road or parking lot you are on is open to the public 24 hours. You cannot step off the road or parking lot.

well, in PA, you can carry anywhere you want except for where prohibited by law. this includes college campuses. they may have "no guns" policies, but then, they'd have to know you were carrying to enforce them, right?

and, yeah, i have noticed that college campuses are frequently located in less than desirable neighborhoods. i don't why that is. is it because the colleges attract the lowest common denominators of society, or vice versa? or is it just a case of the colleges looking for the cheapest real estate they can find? i can personally talk about two schools in PA, Temple University and the University of Scranton. both are top notch schools, but the neighborhoods they're in are terrible. oh, and both schools prohibit firearms. think that stopped me?

Not many places in Raleigh bother me anymore.
My youngest went to Carnage MS and is now at Enloe HS - both are in less than desirable areas of town, but i feel safe.

The area behind Centennial and surrounding Dorthea Dix though needs to get bull dozed, full of IE's and a haven for drug activity.

It's simple, really. Who wants to live near thousands of drunken, rowdy college students who don't care about the area they live in and trash it because they're only going to be there temporarily? Seriously, who would want a frat house on their street? Football games and other sporting events causing massive traffic, tons of drunk drivers (goes for any given weekend), etc. Cars broken into, as well. This drags property values down and the non-college people who move in permanently are usally in lower income brackets and generally have minimal education, which pretty much equals higher crime, drug use, etc.

Same goes for military bases and thousands (or tens of thousands) of drunken, rowdy service members, too. Often, there's lots of associated noise (air bases) or, in the case of most Navy bases, they're located in industrial port areas, which are never good. Again, property values suffer, which brings the entire area down...sometimes to slum levels.

In MI I can legally carry on campus, just not in a dormitory or classroom. No school carry though, those are GFZ's.

I just graduated in May, and I hope most people don't think of college students this way. I know there are some bad apples, but I know for a fact that most are good kids, at least at Texas A&M.

But you are correct about the traffic jams, after a football game it is horrible.

I drive a full Dinan BMW M3, windows down, Slipknot blaring, sun roof open, through the ghetto areas between Houston Community College and University of Houston regularly. For those of you who don't know, that area in between is the third (or 4th/5th) ward and isn't the friendliest place on earth. Actually it is just down right bad.

I understand that ghettos are intimidating but... comon now guy. It isn't that bad. Just be smart and watch for people approaching, then again living in Houston there is always a homeless guy approaching with his sign or something. Even if I could carry, I would be screwed regardless because it is normal for people to walk up to your window and "talk" to you while you ignore them. Unless it is the cool homeless guy under 59 and Alabama that I like...

As for CHL in Texas at college. Don't do it, even in the parking lot. They will burn you, after they impale you, but before they rape you.

When I worked at University of Chicago Hospital (horrible neighborhood) I spent everyday cursing Daley and the Socialist Republic of Illinois for not being able to carry.
I remembered all the rules, head high be aware, show no fear, avoid direct eye contact and make sure every BG thinks there is an easier target.
Never got messed with, but being 6' 275lbs with my arms sleeved with tattoos probably helped ;)
