    South Dakota where-not-to-carrys?

We'll be visiting next week to see the family. SD honors our VA permits (yay) and I've tried to do my homework about the rules, but have been somewhat unsuccessful in finding much... perhaps because SD is a friendly state.

What do I need to know about carrying in SD? I assume no Post Offices, schools, courthouses, bars or Federal facilities. What am I missing? Any 'oddities' I ought to know about, like NJ's hollow-point or VA's restaurant rules? And did I miss any Federal rules?

    Thanks, all!

Did you check handgunlaw.us yet? They usually cover just about everything.

You might want to recheck your info. VA State Police website does not list SD as being a state we have reciprocity with or a state that honors our permit, and SD AG website does not list VA either. So unless you have a non resident permit from a state they honor you can't carry.

at the bottom of the page linked in the above post:

    http://legis.state.sd.us/statutes/Di...atute=23-7-7.4

23-7-7.4. Nonresident permit to carry concealed pistol--Validity in South Dakota-- Application. Any valid permit to carry a concealed pistol, issued to a nonresident of South Dakota, is valid in South Dakota according to the terms of its issuance in the state of its issue, but only to the extent that the terms of issuance comply with any appropriate South Dakota statute or promulgated rule. However, if the holder of such a nonresident permit to carry a concealed pistol becomes, at any time, a legal resident of South Dakota, the provisions of this section no longer apply.
South Dakota law appears to automatically hold valid permits from ANY state.

    SD honors everyone's permit.

One place that hasn't been mentioned specifically is the State capitol, which is included in the definition of courthouse. I'll also point out that the definition of courthouse includes any building attached to the courthouse, such as the police station in my town.

Also, there's a lot of Federal/Corps of Engineers land that's covered by Federal law, which is apparently off limits for CCW, but I haven't heard of anyone getting in trouble over it. The Badlands National Park is an obvious one though. But those are the same Federal rules as anywhere, so that shouldn't be a surprise.

Indian reservations also have their own rules, but I've heard they're typically OK with it (if you get permission). The official policy is usually that you have to clear it through the tribe's cheif law enforcement officer or a certain tribal judge, but each reservation has it's own rules. Although, you're not likely to be going through any of those, unless of course your family lives on one.

South Dakota is a very gun-friendly state, and has statewide preemption, including for state agencies (like Game Fish and Parks), and you don't have to worry about the ordinances that you see on the books in some places (like Deadwood and Sioux Falls).

It's still technically against the law to carry on a snowmobile though.

I think Casinos are off limits. I know when I go to Deadwood they are all posted.
