Andy you are right. A warning shot should always be used, in the center of mass. Immediately followed up with non-warning shots in the center of mass.

If I felt need to warn someone then I'd do so verbally with a; "STOP!. DON'T DO THAT. I DON'T WANT TO HURT YOU! STOP!!!"

Beyond that though playing around with reduced power and/or blank rounds is IMHO a fools folly.
I can see what the gentleman is thinking but the thing is why would a trigger pull be necessary toward a hammer down on a blank if that person were simply in need of a 'warning'. As well he is betting that his buffer of a blank will not be at the expense of NOT having opportunity per effectively a purposeful miss, and failure to stun if not stop, to make a second trigger pull.
That's a hefty bet against the house. Myself I'll take every advantage I can get to try and beat the house. As otherwise why even take a seat at the table?

When bullets are flying towards me, the last thing I need is a blank shot.

As others have said, you have to block the barrel for an auto loader to cycle using a blank.

I Don't know what state he is in but Florida has very specific laws regarding brandishing a firearm.

Long story short, if he pulls a gun on someone he has best have the authority to use it.

Well, I've shot blanks for several years now but it hasn't spoiled my fun and I don't feel any crazier for it.

Challenge him to a duel and see what he thinks then. I think he is either crazy or he is giving the BG too much credit.

blanks don't cycle a gun's action, save for a pump or bolt action...

STUPID! That weapon is not for warnings!

No law enforcement agency that I am aware of authorizes warning shots, and NO law enforecement agency authorizes blank rounds in your weapon. 'Nuff said.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
