There is no situation where a warning works in place of a bullet. My great grandfather was a very clear about gun safety, he said "if you point the barrel at it expect to kill it" The axiom opposite end of that statement was never ever lift the barrel towards anything you don't intend to kill, it may result in the lose of your life.

For VERY brief time I worked as a guard at the local prison. One of the inmates approached me and asked if we didnt have to fire a warning shot before targeting someone that was escaping.
My reply: They told us to fire a warning shot, but didnt say it had to be the first one.
The old guy is a FOOL!

The only warning shot I offer is if there is more than one assailant, the chest shot at the first assailant will be the warning shot to the second assailant.
Warnings are made verbally while you draw, if at all.
After that it is 2 to the chest and if that fails one to the head or the hip, until they stay down or I run out of bullets
