Crazy old guy at the range, or is he on to something?
I like to chat with older guys at the range because of there experience. The other day this guy was saying how he carries with a full mag plus a blank in the chamber. he said he can use it for warning shots or if he needed the real thing he could double tap, shooting the blank and then a real round. I am still unsure how I feel about this method so i figured I would tell you all about it and hear what you all had to say.

How reliable are blanks for cycling the slide would be the concern.

Sounds really stupid to me. He is
1. making his carry gun less effective by one round
2. may not have enough time to get a second shot off
3. can be setting himself up for potential legal problems with a "warning shot "
4. may experience a jam with his blank round

just like with any carry ammo I would run at least 50 rounds through before it left the house like that

That would work in a revolver, but to work reliably with blanks a semi-auto needs to be modified rendering it unusable for live ammo.

He is nuttier than a fruit cake and should be dipped in coffee before being allowed to speak.

Ok, well...... if you plan to shoot a blank...... in my mind you shouldn't be pulling your gun because there is no "immediate" threat, and you are using your gun as a threat at that point.
If there is an 'immediate' threat, you won't want a blank.

Sounds like the ol' boy has been shooting blanks way too long! He may very well have an unprimed case between his ears.

Not a good idea...actually a pretty bad idea.

If you carry in Condition 3, you have two empty chambers. One in the weapon...the other between your ears.
