Permit in Suffolk Virginia

Hi all.

- No, this isn't a "hey, I just got my permit" thread... but it's kind'a related.

I have had a permit for a bit over 10 years now. And I just moved, less than 60 days before my permit was due to be renewed, ( only about 10 miles, but I did cross a municipal border).

So I filled out the paperwork in my new courthouse... uneventfully. Everyone was nice and things went smoothly.

The interesting thing happened a few days later when I received a letter from the sheriff (printed, but hand signed) saying something along the lines of he had reviewed my application and forwarded it onto the judge.

Now, that doesn't sound improper to me, but I never remember receiving such a letter from Norfolk when I initially applied, or when I renewed the permit 5 years ago.

I was just wondering if anybody local to SE Va knew if that's just a new policy, or something different between Suffolk and Norfolk?

Like I said, a LE officer running a check on a permit renewal isn't something I object to... I was just wondering about the change.

Fozzy, I didn't get a letter here in Henrico county when the sheriffs office forwarded my initial or first renewal for signature. Coming up on renewal again and probably won't then either.

It sounds like the letter is the Sheriff's personal policy. If so, I believe it is a good one. They all should keep applicants informed on the progress of their forms. Glad to hear good news.

My permit is currently pending in Arlington, and all I can say is that I was surprised with how smoothly the process went. Everyone was nice and helpful.

The sheriff's deputy who fingerprinted me said that I was the 4th person that day to come up to apply for a CCW. So, up here in the socialist north everything isn't completely hopeless yet!

I think the county sheriff has to forward fingerprints (if required by your county and not all counties require prints) to the VSP, who then run your background check and return it to the sheriff. It sounds like s/he's just keeping you up to date, but I would consider it unnecessary- why waste the paper unless you were getting denied? I moved to York County, but my permit is still good for almost three more years, so I applied for a replacement from Chesterfield to reflect my new address and had it in four days. No letter from Chesterfield Sheriff. Maybe the Suffolk Sheriffs have a lot of time on their hands when they're not busting meth labs?

At my initial application and then again at my renewal I received a letter from the Commonwealth's Attorney advising me that my application had been forwarded to the judge for signature.

It also had a brief word about the responsibility attendant to CCW.

I took the letter to be a good thing.

The Suffolk Sheriff is a rare bird. Not saying if that's good or bad. You decide.

If the sheriff is up for re-election he may be trying to earn another vote. Which is a good thing.

Got the same thing when I applied for my CC form Suffolk.
No problem, got it right away
