Given the current climate would you get your CCW or not? I take the class next weekend and was wondering if any are having second thoughts?

If I were CHL-less, I would acquire it with all possible speed, yes.

The real question to ask yourself is: why on earth not?

Do it, if for no other reason that it shows you're an honest, upstanding, real-life card-carrying good guy. Worst case is, you wait and then it gets tougher to the point of being a political football, with upstanding citizens simply caught in the fray. Better to sidestep the whole morass. Get it, if you're open to the responsibilities and the right to defend your family. IMO, you won't regret it.

Data Point: When I was learning to shoot pistols, I spent countless times heading to or coming from the pistol range. That was in California, and the statutes covering whether a loaded firearm could be carried were extremely strict in those days. (They're worse, now.) Just for the benefit of sidestepping the lunacy of how to handle entry/exit with ranges, I found the CHL worthwhile. Didn't mean I needed to carry on the streets, but it did essentially cover me for the lunatic infractions that would otherwise be coming my way if caught failing to correctly navigate the morass of "spaghetti" statutes. Ultimately, I decided that carrying was important to me, and I've had a CHL ever since.

I just started a new thread, mentioned that my lady friend is going to take her CCW before the end of the month.

We are afraid the new Governor may attempt to repeal the CCW for the state. We hope current holders will be grandfathered in, if this happens. Only time will tell.

Nothing to lose, lots to gain.

    Welcome!

The new Sheriff in Orange County, California, is doing exactly this, but on a one-by-one case basis in the County.

One view: this is a mommy-may-I card that doesn't hold much water.

Another view: it states you're legally recognized as a good guy by virtue of the hoops you've jumped through. It also covers you from those "spaghetti" situations that would otherwise hang decent folks (ie, loaded weapon in a car). That can never hurt.

Whatever you do, come to know your state's statues exceedingly well. It makes all the difference. Speak to a qualified and competent attorney, if serious questions.

    welcome aboard

first off, welcome aboard from s.e. michigan. and second, by all means
get that permit while you can. i know quite a few people that are
doing just that. taking ccw classes, buying handguns/rifles and
stockpiling on the ammo. good luck in your decision.

There is no doubt in my mind that a person should go ahead and get their CCW as soon as they can. Yes, of course there is a reason to get it due to the new political scene but the right to defend yourself and your loved ones at all times trumps that easily! It only takes a small amount of time and effort to get one so go for it.

Given the current climate, I'd get:

    1. Your CCW.
    2. An "assault rifle"
    3. Lots of ammo
    4. A way to bury all of the above in the backyard

    Welcome fellow NC'r
Go on down to yer Sheriff's office the day after you finish your class and seal the deal.
Even if you don't carry, it's a good guy card, and it lets you make on the spot purchases.

My only second thought about concealed carry was that I should have gotten mine sooner.

I appreciate the welcomes and Thanks for the replies.

I am going to take the class but was just wondering if anyone had any reasons not to do it.

    Thanks, Ray
