Carry Permit Renewal in Tennessee New twist

Wednesday I went to the local DMV office to renew my drivers license and carry permit. Seems that as June 9th you are required to have a certified copy of your birth certificate to renew the carry permit in Tennessee. I happened to have one and returned the next day went off without a hitch. Wanted to let my fellow Tennessee permit holders know what to look forward to.
It seems that some felons got their permits by hook or crook and someone feels that they won't get a certified birth certificate.

what is a certified certificate.

The certificate must be an original copy from the State with the State seal embossed on it. A Notary Public seal won't get it. Start working on getting a copy about 6 months to a year ahead of renewal, especially if you were born out of state!

I had to show my BC when I renewed my DL a few years ago, then when I renewed my HCP last year I did not have to show it. My renewal of my HCP was due in Nov 2007 but I sent mind in Aug. 2007 and had it back in a week.

Is this part of the new license requirements under the Patriot Act?

Was a birth certificate the only acceptable alternate ID document? Would a US passport (containing the same information) work?

Glad I don't live in TN...I was born in DC and the records building holding their copy of my birth certificate was flooded in the late 80s, destroying all of their copies. All I have is a single copy.

Connecticut started this also. I think in June.

As to the question about the Passport I don't recall if it was acceptable. The first clerk that I spoke with mentioned the certified BC which I happened to have so I used it, seems though a passport would be acceptable but don't take my word for it go to the Tennessee Dept of Safety web site to get the particulars.

Current OR expired passport is fine..

I had to have mine when I applied in December 07.

I've heard that they may waive this requirement if you don't speak English...:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
