A local gunsmith told me that my slide would need to be milled to change the sights for my 1911. Which he said is a costly process. Or else the front post would eventually "pop out".
I was looking through 1911.org and came across a thread, which is talking about "drop-in" sights.

I've never had a front post sight pop out over lots of years and rounds. Last Springfield I had was one of their GI models and I put a Chip McCormick drop in rear sight on it -- worked good after I thought to put some blue loctite on the screw that holds it together.
Hopefully someone else will post about how the front sights pop out. I've got one 1911 that was used by a Bianchi competitor for years - I can't imagine how many rounds she put through that gun. Still has the original little front sight.
I suppose if the front sight wasn't properly installed at the factory it "could" come unpinned, just like any other factory defect. But SA or any other 'smith should also be able to replace a pinned front sight. Just my opinion but unless you actually want to change your sights (night sights maybe), I'd just shoot it and not worry too much.

If the Front sight isnt Staked Properly sure it could pop out i know the front sights on my Springfields also have a roll pin in them to hold them in place even the dovetailed ones
I guess there is one smith around here I will never use again. This is the same "smith" that claimed to have fixed my 1911, twice!! My sixth sence kicked in, when I saw that this kid looked younger than me.
Now I just have to find a decent smith, and do some window shoping.

He's done some minor work for me in the past, a great 'smith as well as an all around "good guy." Did I mention he's a 1911 nut as well? LOL He'll get'cha fixed up, no problem!
