My journey to NY unrestricted license

My journey towards getting an unrestricted pistol permit is almost finished. Today, I had a meeting with the judge who signs off on all handgun applications and amendments, and she agreed to my request to remove the restrictions. I should be getting my new permit next week!

It's been a very long process but now that the end is near, a worthwhile one.

I started this journey back in January 2007 when I submitted my initial application. In June, I had my initial meeting with the judge who signed off on my application but restricted my permit to hunting and target shooting. She said come back in 18 months and if your record is still clean, I will remove the restrictions.

Fast forward to 11/4/08. I write a letter to the judge, asking her to remove my restrictions.

Early January, I get a letter in the mail telling me that I have to meet the judge again on Jan 16.

Jan 16. I have a 9:30 meeting scheduled and arrive at 9:25. I have to wait until 9:50. I go into chambers, get sworn in and she asks why do I want to have an unrestricted permit. I tell her "self protection for me and my family". She says "since your record is clean, I see no reason to deny your request. You'll get your amended permit in the mail. Have a nice day."

    So, to summarize:
Time to get initial pistol permit w/restrictions: 5 months
Time to get restrictions removed: 19 months
    Total: 24 months

Trip to Wallyworld planned for next week!

Wow. Congratulations, but I see yet another reason why I would never want to live in NY.

Always nice to see that happen!
Well, at least you were able to get one eventually. In Massachusetts . . . h** no! So glad that we moved to Florida!

Congrats on the unrestricted permit. The wait sucks, do they think something new was going to come to light during the 18 month wait from initial until unrestricted?

A good thing you or your family were not victimized within the past 24 months.

    The judges position is ridiculous.
You already have had no problems and a clean record. Waiting 18 months proves nothing.
If you wanted to mess up you could have done that without spending the coin and time to see her face, as based on street crime results.

    Ridiculous.

I forgot to add: I was in her chambers for about 1 minute this morning! There was nothing I couldn't have done over the phone!

    Congratulations….

Well, I’m glad New York has a program for getting a CCL; even if it does take two years.

Now we need to work on Chicago.

    Congrats!

I'm convinced the NY process is one hurdle after another designed to get an applicant to quit because it's too much hassle, can't take the day off work, missed the narrow time window, etc.

I'm glad I don't live in NY anymore.

That is insane. While I'm glad you were able to get your license, it's really disheartening that you have to jump through all the flaming hoops for it.

Congrats! As most others have said, that's a whole lotta headache and hoopla, but you persevered. I grew up in New York, and aside from visiting family there's not a single thing that would ever make me go back.

If you are issued a restricted permit for target shooting what does that mean? You can CC to and from the range? You can CC anywhere on the days you go to the range?

Congrats on the paper, but I agree it is a ridiculous process.

Not so fast. Unless I'm mistaken, his permit is for New York State. Also unless I'm mistaken, in New York State, municipalities can implement prohibitions on their own, making the permit worthless in their jurisdictions. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this is valid for N.Y.C. at all, in fact I don't even think he'd be allowed to posses the weapon, even locked in the trunk of a car unloaded, if his destination were N.Y.C. Am I correct?

IMO, CC should be legal in all jurisdictions, Nationwide, with no permitting or licensing required. I think that was the intention of the Framers of the Constitution.
    Regards, T Bone.
