Yeah, I think it all depends on what "not previously able to own" means.

    I could be wrong, though.
You are correct, if they wanted to be jerks about it you would not be able to hand your gun at the range to another shooter to try if that pistol is not registered in their name. You must be a peace or police officer to accept a handgun from someone. Even in correctional facilities or police departments a civilian worker can't check in weapons from LEO's.

My course instructor told me that you are allowed to use another permit holder's pistol on the range if you are in the same room as them. I tried to find the applicable statute, and was unable. I'd love to get this cleared up though.

Me too but you will get a hodge podge of answer even asking this question. If you ever get a real answer let me know.

I noticed your location in your avatar. Where is Fairfax? I thought I hasd been through all the towns in VT but I never heard of that one. Just curious. I love riding those roads on my Harley.

Not sure about your "who was not previously able to own" statement.

Mississippi does not require a class before issue. Our state does require the usual fingerprint, background investigation, etc. before issuing a permit.

Fiearms permits do not require that guns be registered.

It seems like New York is in a class of its own in some things.

Having to have a permit so that you can own a gun is ridiculous.

You need a permit for handguns only, not long guns. I believe is should not be required for either but our legislators have a different opinion.

    Maybe we need different legislators.

Here in SC, permits are not required for ownership or CWP license. When my wife and I took our CWP course(8 hours and live fire) we noticed that there were several people who appeared to have never handled a gun! Scary watching them swinging the gun around at the range! Our instructor, thankfully, noticed very quickly and directed a lot of attention to these individuals

Fairfax is about 20 miles north of Burlington and the next town east from Georgia or Milton, if you're familiar with those towns. It's beautiful here, we're at the edge of the mountain range.
