    Desperate times Desperate Measures

I live near Knoxville Tn. I spoke to a man today that was in a Church Shoting about 6 months ago. He is a retired Vet. I think for vietnam. Goes to a church play to see his grandaughter just sits down and a man starts shooting peaple. He is one of the ones shot. I was raised in church all my life my dad being the sunday school super. he would not or let me even take a pocket knife to church. BUT I never once heard of a shooting in a church. So Desperate times Desperate Measures. I think God helps those who help themselves.

    Amend the statute!!!

    Ok, well here's my suggestion:

The public schools are a matter for state regulation; those which receive federal funds could be subject to regulations tied to the receipt of such funds.

Private and parochial schools (somewhat redundant in my view) as landowners or lessees can regulate their own property already, and are free to do so as they wish.

Therefore, I would amend the statute to completely eliminate any reference to "school zones". It creates far more problems than it solves, and in particular creates the invitation to those who are not among the most law-abiding to show up with guns and start shooting our kids. When parents and teachers have been rendered defenseless and unable to protect the kids, we have a major problem on our hands (Columbine? Va. Tech?). The United States' pro-crime approach is the cause of that problem. Make them fix the statute.

First of all, as a youth pastor I feel that whatever a church can do to get people more willing to come through the doors and sit down is a good thing.

To say that there is no long term value I believe this pastor is missing the point. How many times have we here heard, "I don't go anywhere I can't carry"? If the doors are going to be open to all then would this not be opening them wider ?

Second, I am at a church barely making it with ~100 people. Am I going to be able to pay LEO to cover the doors for me? Ok say I have LEO in the congregation, are they willing to come in uniform and miss every service - doubtful.

The security team Idea I like, if I were to know who is carrying and willing to help this would be nice because then we could sit down and set up at least some plans and get those folks acquainted and connected better for when the Fecal Matter Hit The Oscillating Propeller.

I'm sorry, but that argument is wrong. The term "school" for purposes of the statute is specifically defined as: "a school which provides elementary or secondary education, as determined under State law" and "school zone" is specifically defined using the term "school" as: "in, or on the grounds of [or within 1,000 feet of], a public, parochial or private school." Your statement that "the two terms are separately defined, and not by incorporation or reference" is simply incorrect--the term "school zone" clearly is defined in reference to the term "school" as defined in the statute.

Nonetheless, the question of how the existence of a "school" at a church affects this issue clearly is a real point to consider.

I am a Pastor. I always carry, including all Church services. Why? Because Churches are not immune to violence. On one hand, the nicest people I have ever met have been Church people. On the other hand, some of the wierdest people I have ever met have been in Church. Years ago I had a man come to Church a few times. Very strange! I was convinced he was capable of any or all kinds of violence. He later ended up in Prison for pornographic exploitation of minors.

I had a Pastor friend who was counselling a woman going through a divorce, when the estranged husband burst into the office and shot her. Thankfully she recovered

Then...there's always the chance that someone doesn't like my preaching and decides to open fire (OK...that was a joke...because EVERYBODY likes my preaching)

I believe that carry to church should be allowed for any concealed weapon permit holder.

    I carry at church

I carry at church. In Michigan we need to get the approval of church official (Pastor, Priest, Minister, Rabbi what have you). I asked my pastor and he said he would welcome me carrying. A few months later he actually thanked me for "having his back". That was three years ago, this past year the minister and his wife both got their CPL's. I don't think the minister carrys while preaching because as he explained it he gets lots of hugs from members and their children and he wouldn't want to offend anyone that found out he was carrying. I don't think he worrys to much because I know he has given seven or eight members permission to carry in chuch. I know at least two other members carry everyday.

18 church shootings in 11 years (A comprehensive list)

And here's the list for 2012:
