I'm on it too, and I am thrilled to no end...now you tell one. I sent my NRA F-rated state representative Kent Coleman a furious email (he is one of Speaker "emeritus"'s Naifeh's minions)--no response. I sent an upset email to my NRA A-rated state senator Jim Tracy and he sent me back not one, but two responses agreeing that it is egregious and that he will be a prime co-sponsor of the Senate bill to make such records off limits to all but legitimate law enforcement activities, as he has been in the past, BTW.
My understanding is that the Commercial Appeal has responded to the protests it has received by removing the streets entirely (the numbers were never there, but WhitePages.com or the phone book could provide that), but they are already out there in the ether for the Internet-savvy criminals to find, I bet. The "Detail" button gave full name and birthdate. How much more is needed for identity theft? If such happens to folks, maybe thousands of permit holders could sue the Commercial Appeal in small claims court in forma pauperis in their respective jurisdictions. How much would that cost them to defend...$1000 or so a pop?
If the public are bound to yield obedience to laws to which they cannot give their approbation, they are slaves to those who make such laws and enforce them.--Samuel Adams as Candidus, Boston Gazette 20 Jan. 1772

Falcon is absolutely correct if we all would sue the scoundrels they would have to go out of business.
I am in Memphis this week on business and the talk station down here is blowing and going about this atrocity, this breaching of privacy, one guy said " I want to see a list of HIV and Aids patients listed they pose more danger than I do carrying my Gun"

The legislature is again considering the bill to prevent publishing HCP records
Americans understood the right of self-preservation as permitting a citizen to repel force by force
when the intervention of society... may be too late to prevent an injury.

This is scary stuff, one step from weapons confiscation. I hope all of you TN permit holders are contacting your state rep's and giving them the business.

I find it ironic that this is the case in TN (a red state), meanwhile in MN there's a statute against that information ever getting released (MN being a blue state).
I don't mind this being a database (duh, for LEO) but it should be wholly private! If I had a 16 year old neighbor who just got their license, I would be in more danger from them than I am of a permit holder. And what if my girlfriends parents saw my name on such a list and forbid her from seeing me? She's definitely not a gun fan at all (neither are her parents), but she sees that they're out there to stay, and that taking them away would only lead to them solely in the wrong hands. Quite frankly if I carry is none of their business, and it's no one's job to make it their business but mine (should I ever want to) and mine alone.
Someone also mentioned the registration and location required for sex offenders. I must admit that I would feel alienated should I be on a list like this. A law abiding citizen should undergo a separate process than sex offenders. Unfortunately, it seems that this isn't the case
BTW: This happened in OH about a year ago, and that list came crashing down almost as fast as it went up.

I'm just one root in a grassroots organization. No one should assume that I speak for the VCDL.
I am neither an attorney-at-law nor I do play one on television or on the internet. No one should assumes my opinion is legal advice.

Anyone from a different state should check their laws as I know in NY, it is public information. All one has to do is go to the local county offices and file a FOIA. Newspaper a couple of counties away did it a couple of years ago and printed the list.

Everyone should let the staff of Commercial Appeal know what you think . . . AT THEIR HOMES.
Public info is a wonderful thing but it seems as though the staff at CA doesn't like it when people look up their public info and post it.

Our socialist newspaper in Roanoke, VA, The Roanoke Times, published the names and addresses of all 135,000 permit holders in Virginia on March 11, 2007. One day later, they took it off their web site. Imagine, a convicted felon that can't buy a gun, can now look up your address and break in and steal your gun(s) while you're gone.
