Really, no public places?!?! Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose?!

Ummm -- "horny state trooper"?
Or did you mean "ornery state trooper"?

Anyway, I'd take that piece of advice with a LARGE grain of salt.
Search for Maine's state laws on the subject, and/or check out handgunlaws.us.
Good luck.

Try: http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/maine.pdf
While not the definitive legal resource, it's a good place to start. Hope this helps.

From what I know (since I carry in Maine quite often), schools, courthouses, federal buildings etc... the basic stuff is off limits. You are ok in restaurants with alcohol, bars, hospitals, state parks (except one upstate, I'm not sure which one tho).

They are pretty laid back up there.

As of today, Maine only has reciprocity with Minnesota. The Maine concealed website has a PDF copy of their concealed carry handbook you can download...you know, the one you were supposed to have read before you applied for your permit.

as stated above Maine is pretty laid back
no federal buildings etc. carry in bars or restaurants is OK as long as you stay under legal limit on alcohol .08 i believe

Per Hangunlaw.US, from the Main page, I found this quote
Maine does not honor any other states Permits/Licenses at this time.
So there is no reciprocity. But I think the OP was wondering about where he could carry in the State.
To the OP, not surprising the Cheifs Assn. gave you the cold reception, nationwide the Chiefs of Police association is one of the Brady Bunch's biggest friends. And calling the police themselves is never a good place to research law either. If the Attny. General of the State will not provide the information (some refuse as they see potential conflict where they may be involved in a prosecution), then read the law yourself or consult an attorney. Always good when folks here or a site like Handgunlaw.US (a great resource, but not the last word) can point you to the actual law.
