Lake Conroe area specific question-TX ??

For Texans familiar with Lake Conroe and vicinity.

I've been look at maps of the lake and surrounding area and parts are national forest (I think carry is OK there), parts I can't figure out from the maps if they are private or public--state or Federal, and the lake itself I am guessing is Army Corp??? Part? All? If not entirely Army Corp, where is it not?

Anyone know for sure if it is/isn't OK to approach the North West portion of the lake (from the Roans Prairie/Shiro/ Anderson/ Grimes Cnty. side) or if there are places in there where carry is prohibited.

What I really want to do is fish up on the north end, well away from 105; above Montgomery.

Interesting question, my inlaws have a house up there in Point Aquarius so I wanted to know this also as I fish up there a lot as well.
SO, spoke to Mr. Gamewarden just now and he stated rules apply just like anywhere else, must be concealed and state you're carrying if pulled over. So, according to him, we are legal to carry anywhere on the lake. Hope that answers your question.

    Hope he is right.

I found this on the net:Are firearms allowed?
Use, possession or transportation of firearms, Notice: Any prohibited acts and other public hunting regulations do not in any way restrict a person having a concealed handgun license from possessing a concealed handgun, loaded or unloaded, on public hunting lands in strict accordance with the concealed handgun laws.

So in the National Forrest, no problem. It looks like the lake might not be owned by the Army Corp; elsewhere I found that it was a joint project of several state entities.

This stuff can get tricky. All we can do is try our best and hope for the best.

Does the castle doctrine extend to your boat as well as your car? Good question. But I spoke to THE gamewarden of lake conroe and he said absolutely no problem with carrying while fishing, etc. And that was after I spoke to the lake controlling office and conroe pd, they all referred me to him.

I don't know. Somehow I doubt The Leg ever considered Pirates and boarding parties. Besides, my kayak would be a tad hard to board and I swing a mean paddle.

Its not in the boat I would worry about....it would be when launching or departing. Some of those ramps on the North side of the lake are real primitive.

By that do you mean they attract "the wrong people" because of isolation? Or do you just mean the facilities aren't especially O.K.

If you are real familiar with the lake, would you pm me. I'd like to talk to you.

Hopyard, you will be fine. I live near the lake and it's just fine. Don't worry about carrying, just make sure you have your CHL handy, and keep it concealed.

There are occasionally some "locals" around those boat ramps, but they tend to be good locals, and not undesirables. Still, the possibility exists, so it's never a bad idea to be carrying.

PM me if you need more.

John Henry-- where's a good public access place near the 1097 Willis-Montgomery Hwy? On the West side of the lake?

Ah, sorry, yeah my inlaws have a home up there on the water haha, forgot about those pesky boat ramps. :)
But yeah, I've never really run into "those" kind of people out there, only the turds in the cigarette boats that go racing past you.
