    Whom to notify?

When traveling in a National Park, not inside any building, and the park is in a 'Must Notify' state, whom do I notify? Meeting a Park Ranger can/will happen frequently as you tour, but the Park Police are less often encountered. In our state, we must notify if in contact with an LEO in an official capacity. Would this be the same for the Park Police, but not for the 'Ranger'? Rangers are often part timers, such as retired or students and are unarmed; the Park Police are, well, police.

This may be a bit pedantic, but the U.S. Park Police only work in a small number of NPS units, all located in San Francisco, New York City, and the Washington D.C. area. Park police wear a distinctive uniform with a light blue shirt, different from the gray one rangers wear.

The folks you see performing police duties in other Park Service units are Law Enforcement Rangers. They wear the exact same uniform as other rangers, but wear a different badge. The best way to recognize them is probably the fact that they are armed. If you see a ranger wearing a duty belt with a pistol on it, they're an LE Ranger.

I would notify anyone who has the authority to ask you to present your identification to them.
