    South Dakota law updates

--saw several weeks ago that legislation had been introduced to prevent municipalities, etc., from passing more strict concealed carry rules than state law--and that a certain Sioux Falls legislator had promptly amended it to provide the opposite.

--wondering if anyone out there is up to speed on this--haven't been able to find anything in the online newspapers-

I haven't heard anything about it from my friends up there. South Dakota was the first state I had a carry permit in, from what I remember, it wasn't hard to get and the area around Rapid City was very gun friendly. That was many years ago though so I don't know what it's like there now.

The amended anti-gun version of HB1278 passed the senate State Affairs committee without much opposition, but was unanimously voted down by the full senate (tabled, actually).

That's why you didn't hear more about it, because it didn't go anywhere.

Here's the committee vote, if you're interested. Most of them are from Sioux Falls, and voted for the amended bill.

    Abdallah Yea
    Gray Yea
    Hanson (Gary) Yea
    Heidepriem Yea
    Knudson Yea
    Olson (Russell) Nay
    Rhoden Nay
    Turbak Berry Yea
    Dempster Yea

On a more positive note, SB70, to repeal the 48-hour waiting period to purchase a handgun, for those without a concealed carry permit, passed with only 1 nay vote and was signed by the governor last week, and should be effective July 1st.

--thanks. As usual, Gene Abdallah is the primary culprit--
