    Code words for children

I was at Wally World today with my 3 boys (1, 4, & 5) to get the glasses of my oldest adjusted. While there we went to the sporting goods section to get some ammo.

"Are we going to buy bullets?" asked my oldest. "Shhhhh!" said my 4 year old. "It's a secret!" very indiscreet. I have already talked to the boys about keeping their mouths zipped when it comes to weapons and ammo in public places. Obviously this wasn't working.

On the way home I decided to try and teach them code words that wouldn't be obvious but at the same time, could be used freely without anyone catching on. I decided to use the codeword "NAILS" in place of "Bullets or ammo" and "HAMMER" in place of "Rifle or gun". I drilled this into their heads. So now they can ask, "Daddy? Are we going to buy NAILS for your HAMMER today?" and no one would be the wiser.

Do any of you have code words that you have your kids use in these situations?

By the way, 45acp was sold out.

Not yet, but I really like your "hammer and nails" suggestion. I think I may use that with my son, as we expect to be purchasing our 1st gun in the next few months.

So in place of caliber wars that we fight about, now we get to fight over ball peen vs claw vs sledge!

    10 penny nail = Corbon?

I don't have any kids but I am going to start using that.
A woman from work saw me at WW and said what are you doing way up here at this wall mart? Don't you live far from this one?

(I was searching for ammo at all the WW in my area.)

I told her I was Umm ahh getting sunglasses. She said way up here? I said it's on the way to my parents.

Nosy busybodies. Tell her you're looking for edible condoms, and your local store doesn't sell them.

Didn't know they made edible ones!!

As to using code words with young children, not sure how well it will work. Just one thing for a busy young mind to have to remember.

My boys grew up in rural areas (MI and AK)...years ago...back when bullets, gun, and the Bible were words freely spoken.

I still live in the rural South, and the same holds true here.
I guess if you HAVE to use code words, go for it, I'd simply tell them (kids) the truth and explain when and when not to speak to strangers about anything.

Kids are smarter than most think possible. We teach them to be aware of other 'life' problems, why not when to discuss CCW and ammo?

That's my penny and a half...

I usually told my wife I was going to Walmart to by a raincoat for Jimmy?

We have 2 kids and I've never made a big deal out of going to pick up ammo for any of my guns. They both know I carry and they every say anything to their friends. When their friends come over and seen the gun safe my kids tell them it's just valuables. I heard my daughter say that to her friends when we lived in Virginia and my son says the same thing. I never even told them what to say.

Clearly you are failing to account for the advances in modern nailery. I feel that I am adequately protected by my 6 penny these days and nail placement is what really matters, anyway!!!!

Your joking right??? This IS a joke right???

When did gun owners become like criminals and have to hide what we do?? Are they keeping the the guns and ammo at Walmart behind a curtain now, like they keep the porn at a video store???

Did you make sure to look around suspiciously when standing at the gun counter before ordering anything??

What are you teaching you kids by being subversive about owning guns and shooting??? If your that embarressed to let anybody know you own a gun then get rid of them.

People are fighting locally, regionally, and across the nation to make sure guns and shooting stay out in the open and remain accepted as normal.

Come out of the closet already. Stand up for yourself, and what you believe in. Teach your children never to be embarresed to express what they believe in. If your afraid of what people may think or say then educate yourself so that you can speak intelligently to them.

For myself, I'm not concerned about who knows I shoot and who doesn't. I can see the merit to keeping it from people, but I don't take pains to do so. I don't advertise, but I don't feel that it's something I need to hide.

I see where you are coming from and I agree with you. However, I'm trying to implement this with my kids because I don't want other people to know I have firearms. It's none of their business and the less people who know, the less likely my home could be a target of someone who heard from someone who heard from my kids that we have firearms in the house. Until they can learn discretion, this is what i have chosen to do. I believe in being the 'gray man.'

I was thinking the same thing.

We talk openly about it here. No reason not to its my 2nd amendment right.
Shoot just friday we were sitting in the middle of McDonalds talking about the new gun store that opened up in town and about my uncle wanting to get a new 12gauge for beside the bed.

Dont be shy when it comes to the 2nd amendment.

Your buying ammo for your gun, just like you would batterys for your remote. Neither one are illegal or make you a bad person.
