    Question Newbie from Indiana question....

Just a general question prob answered a million times already but........I recently bought my first handgun so tomorrow I head down to local police dept. and start paperwork for my CCW permit, I generally know all the rules etc. but I was wondering.........what reason shall I give for wanting such a permit, they do ask this question and I have been told that you have to have a better reason than pretty much just because !! Also been told that because its my right kinda isnt the right answer............actually all I can come up with is " I just want a carry concealed permit for my personal protection !! "

    Thanx, Kerry

First of all, welcome to the forum!

Personal protection would be my reply, as well as, target practice and home defense.

Hey Tusk, welcome to the site. What works in my gun restrictive state of Mass. is "Any Lawful Purpose" as the reason for issuing license. (Like we should really need a reason?) Good Luck!

Greetings and Welcome from Fayetteville, NC!!!

Tell them That your personnel protection is high up on your concern meter.

If that don't work, tell them that it is lighter than carrying an LEO around all day.

    Question Whats a good answer......??

Going to start process of getting CCW tomorrow here in Indiana, have to go to city police and do the deed, Indiana is " shall permit" but they still ask for reason you want CCW......is '' for personal protection" a good enough reason.......or do they want more ??
I do travel thru-out city in early morning hours 5 to 6 days a week ( 3am or 4 am, if get butt outa bed to go to work on time) and have noticed changes in neighborhoods from past years.......

for me yes but for them well..... if they give you any hassle on it just bring in the daily paper and show them the crimes that are reported.....

I don't remember exactly as it has been awhile (my ccw is lifetime Indiana btw). However, I think the only two options are 'target practice' and 'personal protection'.

MAYBE target practice is easier to get if you'd have past problems with the law or something. I would think you'd have a serious issue in the courts with that declaration over picking 'personal protection' if you ever had to use your ccw weapon though.

When I did my permit two years ago, I checked the "Personal Protection" box and moved on. If you say target, your permit will say target and I don't know about the legality of concealed carry. However, Indiana is a shall issue state and you need not give any reason. I checked a box and that's all. No one asked why or seemed to care. In fact, no one said a word about my application other than a 'thanks' when I handed the clipboard back. Make sure you take advantage of the lifetime permit as we're the only state to do such and the rumors have been circulating that it will be going away in 2010.

    Best of luck!

Check the personal protection box. I don't even know why they have a box for "target shooting". The only thing they should ask for is the money. Indiana is shall issue and you will get your LTCH, unless you have something on your record that prevents it.

Tell them you'd like to join thousands of others in your home state that are making a difference and turning the tide against crimes against humanity.

Hindsight is 20/20 and thinking back couldn't I have just leave that option blank? I see nothing in the law that says you have to state why you want it. My license doesn't say 'personal protection' on it, but does it specifically say target if you select target shooting?

The lifetime is going away due to state revenue issues from what I've heard

Just check the "personal protection" box. Like I stated in your other thread, the only thing they'll ask you for is the money.
