18 Days turnaround in NC!!!
I applied for my CHP in at the Catawba County Sheriff’s office on 3/10. They told me that I should call back in roughly 30 days, but not to get my hopes up since the average turnaround time has been the full 90 days. Well, I nearly experienced an Accidental Discharge (not the kind that happens with a gun, if you know what I mean) when I called this morning and they said to come on down and pick it up!!!
My wife sat there shaking her head as I bolted down the stairs three at a time, stopped for a brief happy dance
in the middle of the living room and then charged into the shower. On my way out the door, since I didn’t have the permit in hand yet, I grabbed my gun and locked it in the trunk and headed out.
When they handed me my CHP at the Sheriff’s office, I noted the expiration date as 3/28/2014. So, I asked the clerk and he confirmed that it was actually ready for pickup on 3/28/2009. He apologized and said they have been very busy and haven’t had a chance to call everyone yet. No matter, I wasn’t going to let that ruin my mood.
So, upon leaving the Sheriff’s office, I rescued my XDM 40 from the cold, dark and lonely trunk and tucked it away cozy and warm in my holster. I stopped at a gun store close by to the Sheriff’s office and found a couple of nice leather holsters, one for warm weather and the other for cold weather clothing. Then, I stopped for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat along with reading the morning paper. Finally, I made a couple of other miscellaneous stops on the way home. All in all, a very uneventful first time CC experience. Upon arriving home, the wife was happy to see that I didn’t shoot my eye out.
I had a few things to get done at home, so I plan on doing my WWW later this evening so I can take my time. Report to follow.
So, if you live in Catawba County, NC, don’t wait for the call. Call them!!!

Thanks!!!
Springfield XDM 40 All Black. Not easy to conceal, but I seem to be managing so far. I'm still researching a more appropriate carry weapon.

Congrats from a fellow Catawban. Also, what gun shop is close to the Sheriff's Office? I'm not familiar with it and look forward to investigating!

Don't know what its like now, but last fall the wife got her permit in Wayne County in about 28 days. At the time that we picked up the permit the Deputy said he was spending most of each day taking applications or dispensing permits. If I remember correctly he said there were about 18,000 permit holders in the county.
Its a shame that youth is wasted on the young.

Congrats on that new permit!
"That I cannot do."
"Give this to, uh, Clemenza. I want reliable people, people who aren't going to be carried away. After all we're not murderers in spite of what this undertaker thinks."
