This is an email I want to send DPS. Please give feedback
Dear Sir/ Madam,
The DPS Concealed Handgun Licensing Dept. received my certified packet
On 3/9/09. I was issued a pin number via email after I inquired about tracking
My status on the DPS webpage. My status still reads “No application or
license/certificate active.” Does this message mean that my application has
not been reviewed yet? How would I know if there was a problem that might
need to be addressed? I do understand that there is a backlog due to many
new applicants I just wanted to make sure everything was progressing
naturally.

What time frame do they tell you? Where I live it can be up to 90 days!
ALWAYS carry! - NEVER tell!

When you see "processing" you will know things are happening. Should be 60-70 days total.

Ernie,
I mailed my packet to DPS on 3/9/09 as well. I still do not have a pin # yet. I was told in my CHL class to not call them until after 60 days. I talked with other people that took the class with me and they have not recieved their pin # either. I would just assume they are very backed up in Austin.

My concern is that my status has not changed in 32 days. If it were to be checking back ground or processing I 'd atleast know what was going on.

Wow, that is long. I guess they really have to update the web-site. I do know they're cutting back on state workers so that too could be part of it. Also, they receive a lot calls each day by folks asking about updated processing. All combined, they're really busy.

Just be patient and wait. They are working on it. If there was something wrong, ie can't read fingerprints, something not signed etc. they will send you a letter stating what else they need.
When the wife sent hers in at the end of Dec, it took right at 60 days, for hers to come back and the same time for my renewal.
Try to be patient.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Got my Colo CHL in 28 days (2 yrs ago) & my Utah in 58 (last year).
Colo has a must issue within limit of (I think) 90 days, don't know about Utah.
Regardless, your letter sounds just fine. You want to know if they got it & if there is any problem.
As far as it taking a long time, I think you are pretty much stuck. It's not like you can get one anywhere else. So just take comfort in the fact that one heck of a lot of Texans are going to have permits too.
FYI, since the election, here in Colo.:
- The wait time on the phone for a CBI handgun purchase authorization has gone from less than 10 minutes to almost an hour. A dealer friend of mine says he has waited as long as 2.5 hrs. & has been as far down in the queue as #283!
- CHL permit classes are up 6 fold, state-wide.
- The wait time to receive CHLs in metropolitan areas of the state is approacjing the 90 day limit.
- Popular ammo, 9mm, .45, have just about vanished from the shelves.
- Handguns of all types have also vanished
- Reloading components that you used to get in 2 weeks are taking 2 months

An unarmed populace are called subjects.

This is not related to Texas, but Virginia has requirement to "issue or deny" within 45 days. If they do not do this in the required time, an applicant can ask for a certified copy of his or her application and it serves as a "defacto permit", until the actual permit is issued or is denied. Of course some localities try to circumvent the law. Is Virginia the only state which does this?
