Please help Long Island NY'er with business carry
Hi all,
I live in Suffolk County Long Island NY, and about 4 months ago I got my Sporting license, which as you know is a restricted CC to and from the range/hunting. (Took about 5 months!) I'm interested in applying for a business carry or business premesis license.
I am also a business owner in Suffolk for the last 14 years and have no background issues or any snags to speak of. I did not initially apply for a business carry because I do not make large cash deposits, but upon further research, I'm finding that I might be eligible for a business premises or maybe even a business carry.
First, is it a fast hard rule that you MUST show cash deposits to obtain a business carry? My business is often open after 10pm and has special circumstances where it may be appropriate to be armed. Is it largely up to the discretion of the licensing officer?
Over the years I have had multiple run ins with EDP's and drunks coming into my business and fortunately I have been able to de-escalate the situation and escort them out without having to call police. I did not make a report on them however, which in hindsight may have been a mistake.
Also, I have taken a basic NRA pistol course and plan to continue taking more NRA courses. Do these qualifications help to increase the probability that I may be approved for any type of business license? I have been shooting rifles for many years and I have been shooting 1x per week since I've gotten my pistol (Glock 19).
Through my business I also have many LEO's who would be more than happy to write a notarized letter of recommendation or be put down as references. I don't know if that would help in the process either since I've been told it doesn't make a difference in Suffolk.
Any information or advice woulde be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

I suggest consulting an experienced attorney at a law firm that specializes in licensing procedure by filling you on the details. They can even vet the application with 100% correct information.
All you have to do is be honest and try to get references to improve your chance of getting licensed after an interview and investigation of your background. Of course, it costs money for service.
Gun Permits, Inc. (there are two more NYC-based firms but I can't locate links...)
NYPD Gun Licensing FAQ
As you know, getting a NYC carry license in any form is extraordinarily difficult and expensive, except for wealthy people with connection (celebrities, businesspeople and politicians).
Good luck!

Sometimes even being rich and popular does not help. I remember hearing last year that New York Mets 3rd baseman David Wright applied for a CCW permit and was denied. He even had LEO pull since his father and uncle are cops in North Carolina and he grew up shooting guns. But even that was not enough for NYC.

Perhaps you might consider moving from NY to a less totalitarian state.

Thanks for the replies guys. Keep in mind that I am in Suffolk County Long Island and not in NYC. There are many more restrictions in the city than out on the island. My restricted concealed carry to/from the range does not apply to NYC. It must be transported unloaded in a lockbox if I was going upstate to hunt or something.
Does having NRA certifications help increase my odds of being approved?
Thanks.

Yeah I got my permit in Suffolk prior to going to NYPD. Took 6 months. Target and Hunting. They are by the book no rule bending. If it says you need a certain amount of cash transport to qualify then you do.
Suffolk made me turn in my permit when I entered the police academy, and NYPD didn't allow you to carry a gun for the 6 months you were in there.
One of the sporting goods/gun places in Nassau had a 24 hour range you could join. Since you have to carry loaded and concealed to and from, if you ever got stopped at 2am you just show your membership card and say you were going to the range.
Try this. Scroll down and look for 24x7

That state sucks. Move, and start your business elsewhere.

Suffolk County will most likely deny your business carry license unless you show cash deposits. I recently spoke to the Inspector over there in regards to licenses and that is the info I was given. Sorry dude. Deal in cash.
One more step and it's on!

Police are not permitted to be used as references on a pistol application in NY. Just a point of information.

Since no one mentioned it I will. The restrictions on NY State permits are administative and if broken you will not be in any legal trouble. You will lose that permit probably forever but you have not broken any law. Just something to understand.

You can try asking on the forum in my signature. I just tried to search there for you but didn't find much. A couple members from Suffolk but they aren't active on the site much.

My advice is to call your Investigating officer and ask him/her.....also some of them are not even cops! GOOD LUCK. I think it's easier to carry a cop on your back than a weapon in your pocket!
