how do you folks who ride ATV carry while riding?
Bouncing around the trails retention would be a big key. Another consideration would be protecting the weapon from dust, though a good cleaning at the end of the day would be warranted most of the time I would imagine.
Thoughts?
I usually have my .44 mag on my side while riding. I use a cheap Uncle Mike's holster that straps it in really tight.
And yes it gets very very dusty after a few hours of riding. I try to keep my shirt over the holster and weapon to protect from some of the dust...but its tough.
Cross draw most of the time. From a 44Mag down to a 22..... works great!
For the woods, and Uncle Mike's with a strap over the top of the firearm regardless of what gun, usually a revolver, I am carrying.

If your holster won't retain the gun from a a few bumps while ATV riding then you don't have a good enough holster.
Any quality boned holster will work just fine. Kydex also I imagine(I have no experience with Kydex, leather for me).
A cheap nylon type holster probably won't do the job here unless it has a retension strap.

Another option would be a Wilderness Tactical Safepacker. The weapon is pretty much totally covered and protected from impacts. It should also keep it free from most of any dust or splashing mud getting kicked up. Per their website, it was orignially " ... designed to completely protect a firearm and reload for armed mountain rescue teams whose equipment received very hard use in rocky, dusty and sometimes rain-soaked environments."

Same way I do when I carry any other time, OWB Bianchi Carry Loc, no worries and comfortable for all day riding!!

I will usually carry a J-frame in a pocket holster for ATV days. Never had an issue.
Stranger, what kind of dog is that?
Galco shoulder holster keeps my Glock 20 tight and keeps it from bouncing around.
My Artic Cat has a nice little compartment between my knees (where one would think was the gas tank) It will hold a P-3at or WaltherP-22. It stays clean, close to get at, and out of sight.
If you are leaving the ATV then the P-3at goes in my pocket in it's pocket holster of course.
