Made by a an over-friendly relative
I've seen this discussed before but I wanted to get some advice for future occurrences. I was at a family gathering and had been discussing concealed weapon permits with a cousin who seemed very interested in obtaining one for himself. About an hour later, I was walking by him to throw something away, and he gave me one of those "playful" pokes in the side - right on my gun, which was in a belly band on my right-side waist. His eyes grew real big and he asked "are you carrying now?".
My question is - what do you answer in a situation like that?

i'd tell him it was your emergency phone, lol.
i'd tell him yes i'm carrying and explain why.
i've had friends come by my house after work and they're surprised when i undo my work shirt to change and they see a gun.
the usual response is"i didn't know you carried". i tell them that's the whole idea. nobody should be able to tell.
then i tell them i've done it so often that now it's a habit and part of my wardrobe, just like carrying a wallet.

I don't necessarily like the idea of immediately explaining myself. I don't think I've given anyone an explanation yet as to why I carry. If someone were to ask, then I'd give them something, maybe. But I wouldn't immediately explain my reasons just because someone learned of my piece.

I don't care if a family member knows, they all know anyway. Out of family it's a cell phone, pda, etc, etc.

I don't worry too much with family overall so would probably ''come clean''.
Otherwise maybe the enigmatic - ''for me to know, and you to find out'' !

Give a sheepish Austin Powers grin and say "Maybe"
(if you haven't seen that, you probably won't get it.)

This is a subject about which I feel quite strongly. Part of a concealed carry strategy is to carry the gun concealed so that nobody knows (when or if) you are carrying a gun. I will make you a bet that once the well meaning relative knows that you carry, the word will get around as word of mouth does its inevitable job. I had a nephew poke me in the side, right on the gun, and ask me if I carried. Told him it was part of my back brace system for rehabilitation and that his poke hurt like hell so please don't do it any more. In short, I lied but he bought it and that was that. It has been my personal carry policy for many, many years. Nobody knows I carry except my wife. FWIW
