If WV uses the normal definitions of "secondary" school, that would not included colleges.
Any WV people know whether you can or can't carry on college campuses?

West Virginia leaves the decision on right to carry on campus up to each individual school. You'll have to check with your school to see their laws on it.

Not sure on the "actual" law, but I called WV state police on the way up to Mo-town and he says it was a serious crime to have it on any school property. Not sure if that's true, but the cops may think otherwise.

Since it says schools in the law, but doesn't make it crystal clear, I'd think twice about a college campus. They are real touchy on this sort of thing and the mentality would be that you are in the wrong. Might not be worth the chance of getting in trouble, losing your permit and weapon and get that fine and/or jail time.

Best thing to do would be to go on your college's website, or your college PD's website, and look up their weapons policy.

I would agree with Paul & Dawg. Be real clear whether or not you can carry on campus. I think a college campus would absolutely be one place you don't want to be mistaken.

Have you contacted the WV Attorney Generals office for clarification of the law? If carry on campus is OK, I'd want it in writing on their letterhead and signed by someone.

I don't think it's prohibited by state law, but I don't think any allow it either. So if you're a student and are caught, you're probably expelled. A visitor may just get escorted out and asked not to return.
That's different than a state which specifically prohibits it, in which case you're in trouble.

The school's policy is probably at least as important as the law, if you are a student or an employee. For example, in Ohio the state law says that one can have a firearm locked in one's car on a campus, but in all the schools I know of, a student would be quickly expelled (an employee would be quickly fired) for doing this, even though it's supposed to be legal. (Actually, the law is vague enough that a skillful and malevolent prosecutor could probably find a way to convict someone for doing this anyway...)

Marshall does not allow it, and claims to be able to enforce that on any property next to their campus, including public streets and parking places. Bear in mind that the university owens many properties around the state that are not marked as such, and that no, and I mean no buildings are marked. It is in the handbook for students and faculty - but common people would have no idea.

I just got back from Huntington late last night.
We were at the Marshall graduation ceremony and left the guns locked up in the cars off campus.
I'm not paranoid enough to worry when I am unarmed but in the back of my mind I was thinking, "wouldn't it just be my luck for some crazy to decide to start shooting when I am unarmed".

Any persons who, without express written permission of Fairmont State/Pierpont, enters or remains on any part of property owned, leased, or otherwise used by Fairmont State/Pierpont, or any structure or conveyance thereon, carrying or possessing a firearm or other deadly weapon, who temporarily refuses to relinquish possession of such firearm or other deadly weapon or to leave such premises while in possession of such firearm or deadly weapon shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars or confined in the county jail not more than six months or both unless such person is a law enforcement officer, other person exempt by law or has express written permission from Fairmont State/Pierpont.

Not surprised. That's the way it is in places in WV that are posted. "Gunbuster" signs don't carry the weight of law, but if you don't disarm or leave when asked then you are guilty of criminal trespass.
