    Witnessed a street fight today

Witnessed a street fight this morning. Pulling up to an intersection, my wife and I were about 4 cars back when two fellows got out of their cars and began fighting in the intersection. We assume it was a road rage situation. In my younger days I would have ran out and tried to stop the fight, but my wife called 911 and watched as we were boxed in by traffic. My wife and I are awaiting our permits and had a good discussion on the potential of further violence had I ran out to stop the fight. Who knows what the fight was really about and who were in the car(s) with these two guys. They may have been armed. Also being boxed in by traffic was an eye opener. Some other folks did try to stop the fight, but the guys finally quit, jumped into their cars, speeding off before LE arrived. Like someone signs on this forum, when seconds count, LE are only minutes away.

Trying to stop a fight by yourself is a BAD idea !!! Chances are the two guys are going to turn against you.

Trying to stop an attack is different, you'll find all sorts of opinions here.

You handled things the best way you could have.
Staying safe, observing and making the 911 call are the best things you could have done.

You handled it perfectly, kudos! And how scary to be boxed in by traffic!

Agreed. It's the same principal as getting into the middle of two dogs fighting - only people are worse. The only fight I've ever tried to break up was between two close friends and I got punched in the eye. Then it was on.

You did the intelligent thing. Call 911 and let them fight until the police arrive to break it up. No sense getting yourself injured over their stupidity.

Why get involved in a fight ? Let them fight and MYOB. Call the cops if you want, but breaking up a fight between two strangers is a bad idea. You can get hurt or you might have to hurt someone else ,and for what ? You did the right thing by staying in your car. Like JFL said, a fight is one thing, an attack is another.

Hey Boats - Mutual combat means both are at fault. No need to join them. So yes, you did the right thing.

Two grown men who choose to fight it out?
I'm not getting involved. None of my business...I'm just driving away.
I'm not a cop or a referee. I want out of the area before things escalate.
I'll make a call to 911, time permitting, and leave the area as soon as possible (especially if I have family with me).

You mean you didnt just jump out of the car and shoot both of the guys fighting? I mean the Brady Bunch says thats what normal gun owners should do eh?

Sorry, just having a little fun there... You did the right thing.

I remember seeing a couple of 20-30 y/o guys duking it out on the edge of a busy street one time - they were both so focused on each other that they were paying no attention to traffic (or me). I stood on the traffic side of the combatants and may have even pushed one or both on the shoulder to get them back on the sidewalk, saying, "You don't want to get run over!" or some such drivel. No, I wouldn't do that again, but remembering it gives me a chuckle: almost like the ref at a fight. I think part of the reason I didn't get punched was that they were both pretty winded by that time, and also I probably had some angels working overtime protecting me.

You did exactly what I plan to do should I be put in the same situation. Hope I perform like you did!
