I was down at the S.O. today, taking a neighbor to turn in her app for the purchase permit. They said nope, still busy as ever, and it is now LATE SEPTEMBER to get your appointment to apply for CCH permit, then the full 90 days for processing after that. Grrrr.

In Davidson Co, NC I applied on March 4/09. Today I was in the town were I applied & will be picking it up, so I called to see if it was ready.
Nope. She said it had been ordered (I think that's what she said) but they had to have it in 90 days.
I couldn't remember the exact day I had applied when talking to her on the phone, but tomorrow is 90 days!
Makes me wonder if somebody's just making people wait as long as they can

I'm still waiting on my purchase permit in Charlotte. I should pick it up on the 9th or 10th at the latest. I sent an email to the sheriff's office and got this back:
"Thank you for your e-mail. I understand your inquiry and your question
is valid. To say we have more business than usual is an understatement.
Within the last year, our requests for purchase and concealed carry
permits have skyrocketed. In FY08 we had 9,447 requests for purchase
permits and for FY09, we project approximately 12,500 requests. With
respect to concealed carry permits, in FY08 we received 1,908 permits
and in FY09, we project to receive 2,745. I believe the last count I
heard is that we are issuing almost 1000 purchase permits a month.
We have ten staff members who handle all the gun permit requests, as
well as register and monitor over 700 sex offenders in Mecklenburg
County and perform all required employment fingerprint requests.
Unfortunately, when the NC legislature passed legislation regarding gun
permits, sex offender registration, and required employment
fingerprints, they neglected to appropriate additional funds to counties
to carry out these functions. And, as you probably know, Mecklenburg
County does not have resources right now to provide additional staff for
us at this time.
The Sheriff supports the importance of gun ownership for citizens and he
is working to do more to secure additional staff for this unit, but
until the Mecklenburg County hiring freeze is lifted and the county
budget gets a little better, we cannot proceed with our request for
staff.
It seems that everyone has the same idea right now regarding the
purchase of firearms and that is what the problem is. I'm sorry for the
inconvenience. If you have additional questions, you can contact the
gun permit supervisor at 704-336-8731. Her name is Tamara Rhode. I
hope this information is helpful in explaining our situation."
So...that could explain some of this. I'm at the 26 day mark already; hoping they don't run late!

Appointment? You mean you have to interview?

It goes like this: In Mecklenburg County (Charlotte Area) you have to apply for your CCH Permit by getting an appointment at the Sheriff's office to turn in your paperwork, get electronically fingerprinted, etc. I don't know if they actually "interview" you per se, though.
Once you have your appointment to turn everything in, they start the process on you of getting you your CCHP. Which can take up to 90 days (or longer at the moment). However, NOW just getting your appointment is taking forever.
I called in April and was told late July was the earliest, but someone canceled so I got late June. When I went last week to see if there were any more cancellations and if I could bump up my slot, they said earliest open right now was September.

Every time I read a thread like this I am more and more certain that leaving NC was one of my smarter moves.
