    Tennessee question for a traveler

Hey all, my girlfriend and I will be heading to Florida this weekend. I do not have my KY CCW permit as of yet (playing the waiting game). It is legal to carry a firearm in the car in KY, GA, and FL, but on Tennessee's section of Handgunlaws.us it states: "It is illegal to carry a loaded firearm in any vehicle without a valid Permit/License.".

Does this mean I simply cannot have it loaded? (Not chambered, or magazine seperate from firearm?). Does it mean it cannot be in the passenger compartment? (locked in trunk, with ammo locked separate?).I have read on other sites it must be locked up, free of ammo, and the ammo locked up separate, I just need proof of this to take with me.

Can a Tennessee resident please clear this up for me?, a link to a Tennessee site with the law would be great. Thanks in advance, stay safe!

    -Jerry

Lock it in the trunk with the ammo seperate and you should be OK.
If you want to drop into a coma, try reading some of the TN codes.
There are at least 3 different definations of "loaded"
There is talk that a left winger LEO could arrest you for merely having ammo and a gun in the same car. Of course the chances of that going down are most likely slim to none, and slim left town...but you catch my drift.
in a case, locked in the trunk, ammo in another bag, no loaded mags, you should be fine.

Awesome, thanks so much. I printed the TN regulations off the NRA's site to take with me. Thanks again.

    Ditto what Dunnwd said...

My 2 cents worth, can you legally carry it loaded when you get to Florida? If you can't legally carry...why take the risk and carry?

I would hate to see you jeopardize getting your KY permit (and possibly loosing the weapon) if you were pulled over for example for a traffic violation, and the LEO searched the vehicle and found your piece.

Just want to clear up one thing.

You can keep a loaded pistol in your glove box in Florida.

You can NOT carry on your person a pistol without a permit.

As others have said, Federal transportation laws are unloaded in truck, if your just passing through.

I am taking it with me, I will leave it in the car when in the car or out and about. I mainly like having it in the condo at night while we sleep.

What? I don't get it. In GA, one can carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle in plain sight, in the console and in the glove compartment without a permit or license of any kind. Fact that he lives out of state does not take away from this. If he is a felon or otherwise barred from owning a handgun, then yes. I do not understand. Is there something else to this?

    yes case law

    Caselaw, State v Burns
    Caselaw on GeorgiaPacking.org, Parrish v. State, 228 Ga. App. 177 (1997)
    Caselaw on GeorgiaPacking.org, Ross v. State, 255 Ga. App. 462 (2002)

under the new law he is in eligible for a GA permit(doesn't meet the residency requirement) and there is pretty much no way to open carry a pistol in a car in GA(hang it from the rear view mirror or tape it to the rear backlight maybe)
