Just applied for Concealed Carry in Ohio.

Hello all, I'm brand new to the forum so I hope I'm posting properly . . .
Anyway I'm a police officer who's been retired just about 10 years during which I owned two pistols but did not carry, although I did enjoy going shooting on occasion. Well, back in April I got the bug, purchased a new Sig 239 in .40 cal and decided to apply for an Ohio Concealed Carry Permit. Overall, it has been a relatively pleasurable experience, although the waiting intervauls between training requirements, actual submission of information/interview and actual reciept of the permit is a bit tedious. Right now I'm about in the middle of the three to four week background check period before actualy receiving my permit. If anyone has any questions or concerns about carrying concealed in Ohio, I'll try to help as much as I can. I'm looking forward to some good discussion on consealed carry and I'm glad to be aboard.

Welcome Mardet65. Question...aren't you covered under HR218 if you retired in good standing and can qualify by department standards? I know the railroad (i am assuming that's where your retired from due to your avatar)may not allow it but I was just wondering.

The controversy over HR218 and whether or not railroad police qualify is still ongoing. Some of the stipulations, re: definition of government organization, qualifying with your department periodically, etc, made it easier for me to just apply for the Ohio consealed permit. There's essentially no difference in benefits or restrictions of Ohio concealed carry as a former police officer as opposed to an everyday citizen. Some railroads themselves are against their retired officers carrying consealed simply due to liability concerns, true or imagined, so their in no hurry to help clear up any controversy.

Hey there, welcome. Glad to see you here. I took my UT permit class from a now retired railroad policeman. Never met anyone more professional and just a great guy. I still speak with him. I guess UT does not have a live fire requirement. I never knew that because his course was all class work in the morning and live firing in the afternoon. I was very fortunate to have him as an instructor.

Welcome from Cincinnati! Yah, the wait was annoying for me as well. It was pass before you know it and then begins the quest for the perfect holster!
