DL checkpoint went sideways - for the other guy.

My wife and I pulled up to a drivers license checkpoint last night. Two lanes funneled down to one, we were about 4 cars back from the LEO.

This was my first opportunity to notify of my carry status, so I was getting my paperwork out and handy, sort of going over my announcement in my head.

A car sort of zoomed up next to us and stopped real short - like they didn't realize what was happening with the lane closure. Then they pulled a quick U turn and sped off.

Well, my first opportunity to notify evaporated as all three LEOs ran to their cars and headed of in pursuit.

    Welcome to Checkpoint Chickie!

Maybe the guy that sped off was the guy they were looking for.

All of the LEOs left? Sounds like the car that did the U-turn could have been a distraction, intended to draw LE away so that a couple of unlicensed drivers could get through...maybe...

Me and a friend got stopped at a dl checkpoint a few weeks ago. As I was getting my dl and permit ready to hand to the officer a guy with his kid pulled up in front of us on a go-kart followed by a woman in a pickup with an unbuckled child standing up in the front seat. Go-kart guy was not too good at following instructions and tried to drive off. Needless to say the Leo that was standing at my window went from friendly to irate in about 2 seconds. I was worried about telling him I had a firearm on me at that point. He told me to have a nice day and to go on without checking any of my stuff so I was happy about that. I imagine they see all kinds of stuff like that at these checkpoints, especially here in rural Oklahoma :)

So do I. I've seen it done to catch DUIs but never just for the sake of checking DLs. Any way you slice it I don't like it.

I may be moving off topic here but it must be some sort of personality flaw with some LEOs. It's like some of them take it personal when someone breaks the law and they totally flip out and curse and threaten etc... Where others do not. I used to be a reserve officer and I have taken people to jail and never gotten even the least bit upset with them. Why should I? Maybe I'm just an easy going fellow.

With the 4th of July weekend coming up there will be even more of these “Revenue Enhancement Stops” popping up.

I'm certainly no constitutional lawyer but these things have to be unconstitutional. I told a LEO that at a road check down in South Carolina. Of course they couldn't care less. Come on LEO's chime in. Our rights are being trampled in order to:

    1. Stop drunks
    2. Catch illegal aliens
    3. What else?

These aren't "safety checks" or DL checks or anything else other than the illegal stopping of people on public byways without a hint of probable cause. Welcome to the new America where your rights have been flushed down the toilet.

I believe, with the exception of airplanes,if you are a citizen of this country, you should be able to travel without interference. Unless of course, you break the law.

I really don't mind these checks. If you keep you Lic, tags & insurance up to date you have nothing to worry about.

We used have to have 'em fairly often in SC and they would nab a lot of illegals that way. But the Feds wouldn't ever pick them up so they just about quit. I haven't seen one now for a couple of years.
