Legal vs. Illegal Handguns in Crime - Any Statistics?
Does anyone know of an official source, compiling/listing whether handgun crimes have been committed with legally owned handguns, vs. illegal handguns?
I have yet to find a definitive answer to this question. Usually crime statistics just tell the type of firearm, but never whether it was obtained legally or illegally.
Any thoughts?

I have not seen any such statistics. What I have noticed is that almost without exception when a gun crime is reported in the newsy, the story either involves
young people who should not have had a gun, or felons who should not have been in possession. I'd guess that only a very tiny amount of crime involving guns happens with weapons legally possessed.

That only happens on episodes of Law & Order.

Don't have any national statistics, but locally I have been advised that 98% of the guns involved in crimes are ILLEGAL.
Its a shame that youth is wasted on the young.

I think you can find some statistics in the books "More Guns, Less Crime" and the "The Bias Against Guns".

Thanks, I'll see if I can get it through my library system One would think that these statistics would be published on the Internet, somewhere.

well thats the problem
If the statistics were easy to come by or thumped on as hard as other less telling statistics a whole group of lobbyists would not have jobs. (isn't obama all about saving jobs?)

Either one, IMO, would imply an illegal handgun.
Although the point could be made, I guess, that if someone invaded my home, and managed to get my legal handgun and shoot me with it, then at that moment, he/she would be in possesion of an illegal handgun.

Illegal handgun?
Sort of like a person born out of wedlock. An "illegitimate" person.
I'm old enough to remember those days.

The FBI has the uniform crime reports
Federal Bureau of Investigation - Uniform Crime Reports
Crime in the United States 2007
They break the data out by state & city, arrests versus crime, for various crimes. I didn't see what you are looking for, but lots of interesting data there.

More importantly how many illegal handguns started out legally ? I mean if they were being stored secure when not in use then they shouldnt be large numbers of stolen handguns.
I did read one study that said something like 93% of guns in illegal circulation are \ have been supplied by 3% of legal owners (ie dodgy gun dealers and individuals).
Which means the rest are illegally imported or stolen.
