Massachusetts has a two (2) tier system. One for carrying [LTC], and one for possession [Class B]. There are about 280,000 records of both tiers. However, it is estimated that only 80% of the 280,000 records are for carrying concealed weapons. This would give an approximate number of CCW's at:
224,000

PA is a bit higher according to this thread. 627,028 active from 2004-2008. Won't see 2009 totals until next year.

So as of 2006, 1 out of every 56 people in my state had a CHP. The numbers are probably higher this year.
That's not bad!

So total on that list there are 3,736,266 active permit holders in the states. With the current US population at 304,059,724 then 1.22% have CCW permits. I would say that we can double that number based on the estimations and missing data. So call it 3ish % of America that are not total sheep.

Wow that's almost 3% of Idaho population that had their licenses back in 2004.
I wonder what it is now?

The last figure for NY that I saw published was over 800,000. It was about 8 years ago so it should be higher now.

That was a good estimate a couple years ago. Remember the numbers of new applicants by county from last year that MP published?
I'd guess that it's probably grown by 50-75k since we were first arguing about HB915 in the assembly in 2007.

Wow. That's.....some number. It's generally accepted that PA has the most licenses issued. Considering that NYS doesn't even issue NR permits, that number is truly impressive.
I'm curious about where you saw that number. Considering the fact that each county in NYS has autonomy over the permitting process for its citizens, I'd be curious about how a total, what ever it really is, was reached in the first place.

Im not sure where he got his information, but according to this blog Brad the Scribe, the number for Oregon is 101,642. The blog is from mid-2008, but no info on the date of his statistics, but with the latest rush, I wouldn't hesitate to nearly double that by now. That would put OR at around 5%
