Ever been made by a dog?

    Let me set the stage:

Walking in to the local pet store past the vet desk in the back. There is a girl there with her dog, he looks to be some sort of mixed breed. Anyways, as I pass he gives me a bit of a goofey look but I don't think much of it and go down an isle just out of view of him. He pulls at the leash and barks several times at me then stops. afew minutes later he's pullin at the leash a little and starting to think about growling. Now I am checking out and she passes right by me dog in tow and nothing.

Am I nuts or did I get made by a dog?

I don't know if this dog "made" you or not but I can tell you a story about one dog that "made" a cop.

My Dad used to own a bar. Dutch, trained German Shepard, went from behind the bar and sat behind the guy. Dad served the man and then asked him, "Do you have a gun." The guy answered in the affirmative and stated, "I'm a cop."

Dad told him, "I don't care, but if you make any sudden move that dog will kill you." Cop finished his drink and left. Dutch accepted family with guns, like my brother. He was a cop for 30 years, and never went anywhere unarmed. I was just a youngster, so I wasn't packing yet when Dutch was alive.

You're not a Hoppes #9 guy, are ya? That stuff always made my neighbors' dogs go a bit skittish whenever I walked by.

Far be it from me to comment on your mental state...

Body language. The dog did not like the way you carried yourself - too much confidence maybe? Dogs spend most of their waking moments in pursuit of just a few things - food, play, attention, other dogs, and the study of humans. Can't get much past a good dog.

I guess I shouldn't have expected a serious response! Yes, I use Hoppes #9, I was thinking maybe he could smell gun powder? Either way it was weird and I haven't had it happen before. I just played it off.

By the way...you can tell when a dog is uncomfortable and working up to growling.

When a dog reacts in those types of situations it's because it's keying off the owner. It has no territory to protect and there is no pecking order to establish [pack status]. The animal is in a somewhat unfamiliar situation and the owner is very often insecure at the vet because he/she doesn't know what the outcome will be and the dog knows it and feels the need to protect it's loved one(s). Given the same criteria you would be on high alert where your family is concerned. The difference is that God gave you a higher level of intelligence than the dog. If it only warned you that it would protect the person it loved it did no more than you would do on a wally world parking lot. If you didn't escalate at that point it was probably damned happy to let it go there. Much as you probably would be in the same situation at wally world. And yes, you should have expected a serious response. The idiots who made fun of you have less than no idea what was happening but [like the dog] had to respond to something they didn't understand.

I'm sorry but something about that made me double over in laughter and almost spit water all over my computer.
