I went to a lecture the other night and Dave from Safe in Rochester made a great point about why he carries 3 mags with him...
Its not necessarily for additional ammunition but rather in case the magazine in his gun malfunctions. In the event one needs to use ones gun there is not time to take out the mag and see why its not working.
Drop it and hope the next one works better... (if you even have that much time)
BUT - I am now carrying 2 mags because i hadn't thought of it that way:twak: ...now if i could just find some pre ban hi-cap glock mags!
Just thought I would share
BTW anyone in rochester - his $10 lecture was worth it IMO especially if you are new to CCW. I am going to take some of his tactical courses...i will advise how those go after i take em'
YES, YES, YES, that is too funny. Might have to use that one myself.
Back to the subject, I could see myself just reloading with the extra mag if I ever had to use my firearm. At least once things settled down. No particualarly strong reason why other than I have the mag, would rather carry it, and knowing a full mag was in place would be a bit comforting. That's good in thoery. In practice, I'm probably shaking too much to use any real motor skills after the bullets stop whizzing. :aargh4:
I only carry one extra mag for each gun I carry (usually three). If I only carried one gun, I would carry two extra mags. It does no harm to me to have them, and can only do good if I need it.
Exactly! I confess that in the past, I almost always carried my pistol and left an extra mag in my trunk, with the lockbox.
Then, earlier this month at an IDPA match, I was shooting a stage when suddenly I heard a 'click' instead of a 'bang!'. I knew I had only fired 5 or 6 rounds, and I started with 11.
Looking down, I saw the mag base and the rest of my ammo (five rounds) lying on the grass next to my mag spring... I rack the slide and see that the mag body is still in the pistol... I drop the mag, reload and continue the stage...
This was a factory mag, with only 1000-1500 rounds thru it. So yes it does happen. I confess there are still times when I don't carry an extra mag - but I'm trying to get better about it and make it part of my routine.
The little lips/rails that held the mag base on had totally broken off on one side - or were defective and never fully formed to begin with and just chose that moment to fail... I haven't been able to determine which.
I always carry at least one and usually two reloads for every gun that I carry
