hello all , my son and i were stop for a light out in the car. my son pulled out his license and his ccl and i had mine he ask my son where his gun was at,my son responded right side belt,,ok so far, but then he ask why we were carrying guns for. i was lost for a few seconds. it never past my mind what do you say to that? my son told him we were going to the range so he let us go (no ticket) but i did not want to tell him cause i can, its my right, that's why i have a permit, why he asked i dont know.but i don't want to be disrespectful

I would have simply told him that you we're licensed to carry something that you have a constitutional right to posses.

I hear what you are saying. You didn't want to antagonize the cop and get your son a ticket. I think a polite "for self protection" would have done.

At that point, it would be, "I have a permit to carry." Then SHUT UP. The traffic stop has just turned into an interrogation and you have rights there, too.

I've been stopped twice while carrying. Once in NC, once in SC. In NC, the gun was on the dashboard as prescribed by law (I didn't have a CWP then). The officer confiscated my weapon for the duration of the stop, and probably ran the serial number while he had it. They can be a little anal/antsy in NC. In SC, the officer simply asked me where it was and told me to "keep your hands away from it."

Be polite, be respectful, but stand your ground on your rights.
