Tell him you carry a gun because he weighs too much to carry on your back.

Yeah, ask him if he's willing to escort you everywhere you go.

I would have simply told him that you we're licensed to carry something that you have a constitutional right to posses.

I hear what you are saying. You didn't want to antagonize the cop and get your son a ticket. I think a polite "for self protection" would have done.

Tell him because otherwise carrying around all these mags/speedloaders would be useless.... (j/k)

Such a stupid question wouldn't warrant much of an answer. My response would have been respectful but minimal.

A simple, "For self protection", should be all the answer he needs.

but then he ask why we were carrying guns for.
At that point, it would be, "I have a permit to carry." Then SHUT UP. The traffic stop has just turned into an interrogation and you have rights there, too.

I've been stopped twice while carrying. Once in NC, once in SC. In NC, the gun was on the dashboard as prescribed by law (I didn't have a CWP then). The officer confiscated my weapon for the duration of the stop, and probably ran the serial number while he had it. They can be a little anal/antsy in NC. In SC, the officer simply asked me where it was and told me to "keep your hands away from it."

Be polite, be respectful, but stand your ground on your rights.

I would have just politely said, "Just in case, sir."
