Very cool and effective that you did some recon before sending the letter.

I was wondering if you were at all worried how it would be received.

It showed due diligence on your part for researching the schools before you sent the letter!

More people should follow your lead!

I cannot open that letter at work, but my question is,.. Is this for just a day care? or for school too? How old is your daughter? Are we talking elementary?

Nice job. I know of a few folks in MN that have gotten permission but I have to say it is a rare occurrence for the most part. Especially in a public school setting.

She's two months old. The letter can easily be adapted for a school.

I would like to put in the same request when I start school next year but a litte afraid of how it will be precieved and if it might have an impact on myself down the road. Might it help if I were to put a little about myself on there? ie CCW permit, five years in the Marine Corps, not even a speeding ticket to my name.

I would suggest not. My route was to make it seem as every-day an occurrence as possible; otherwise, you're making it seem like it's a special case.

I would suggest presenting it as plainly as possible. I am a CCW permit holder, according to statute blah, I need to request permission to carry on blah property. Please sign below, granting me permission. You may rescind any time, with notice, in writing at <your contact info>. Here is the relevant law: foobeans.

    That sort of thing.

I would like to do the same thing, but I'm not sure how to even start either.. Does each school have to give permission on there own? Two kids, two schools? I know my son's principle is a really nice guy, and I could picture him not having any issue with it,. But then again, it would be like him putting himself out there by signing? I've had allot of thoughts about this and haven't acted yet.. What's peoples thoughts?

You could probably go to the school superintendent, who could grant you permission for the entire district. It is the route I would go if both my kids were in school.

Did you go in with the letter? I'm not sure how you get an appointment with a superintendent? Seems when you called they would ask what it was about, that would give out what your trying to accomplish?

Tell the secretary that it is a very personal matter.

To the OP...nice letter, nice response.

It seems to be little known but, in Tennessee, you can have the firearm on your person while delivering or retrieving your child in a school zone.
Caveat is, you can not touch the gun.

This is not a "law" but an "State Attorney General Opinion" as I recall.
Can someone from TN please expound upon this while I am researching?
