Utah Gun Permits on the Rise

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - So far this year more than 57,100 people have applied for a permit to carry a concealed gun.
Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification figures through Aug. 31 show that of those, more than 56,300 have been granted permits.

Last year there were 44,891 applications.

Lt. Doug Anderson told a legislative committee last week that the bureau expects to process 70,000 applications next year. The bureau has added eight employees this year to deal with the backlog. It currently takes 58 days to issue each permit.

In the fiscal year that ended in June, just over 50 percent of the applicants were from outside Utah. Utah's permit is accepted by 34 states.

The state checks a criminal database to determine whether those with permits have become ineligible. Last year it suspended 495 and revoked 332.
For those of you still waiting for your permit to be processed, this is why it may be taking so long.

I think this is happening all over the place. Thanks to the new administration that is.

It bums me out that Nevada Will No Longer Recognize Utah and Florida Right-to-Carry Permits though...

Still, I plan on getting Utah on my next renewal.

I am a little embarrassed that UT does not require going to the range. I had a great instructor in UT who was a railroad policeman and he required an 8 hour course. Classroom in the morning and range in the afternoon. I had to have a course for FL and I went to AZ for the required course. I think NV dropped UT because of no range time and UT should rethink this. My FL permit is becoming more valuable for reciprocity than my UT permit.

I'm also disappointed that NV dropped Utah's reciprocity. The good thing is that NV will issue a non-resident permit, the bad news is that you have to attend the classes in NV. I plan to get my NV non-res permit soon so I'm covered in Vegas.

BCI told a Canadian that all Canadian held CCW permits will expire in 2011 and not renewed. Claimed a Federal law is the reason, some of our CSSA (sort of Canada's NRA) are looking into it.

I'll be adding to that list. I'm going to the Utah CCW class in Issaquah on Saturday.

Our State stats showed something I found interesting...... it breaks it out by age and gender.

    80 + yrs old : 139 males, 8 females.

    GOOD FOR THEM !!!

Nothing wrong with a lot more permits...makes each state a little safer.
I too, am disappointed in NV's canceling of FL recognition. Until it changes, all further trips to Vegas are off.
