For close friends and family, it's "Because I'm a target of the Vast, Left-Wing Conspiracy."

For anyone else, it's "a matter of responsibility and obviously above your pay-grade."

I was asked that in a local TV news interview. I told them that I was too old to run, so if the time came I'd likely have to stay and fight for my life.

The Constitution doesn't guarantee police protection to individual citizens. However, the 2nd amendment states that I have a right to a firearm and the laws of Georgia say I can carry concealed. The FBI trusts me, shouldn't you?

I know Doc; I agree 100%. Now if we could just carry in churches, resturants that sell alcohol, school grounds, sporting events, in airports and in airplanes, and could carry our guns in parking lots of properties and businesses that are no gun zones, and post offices.

I haven't really been asked yet, No one knows except my wife, thatís how I'd like to keep it.

But should the occasion arise, I guess ... likening it to why do they have a spare tire in their trunk, you don't feel like playing the odds game that a tow truck will be driving by when you have a flat, don't want to wait for the driver to get the dispatch call, and then get rolling in your direction, and then hope that the dispatcher got the addressee right and they can find exactly where you are at without delay. There are a whole lot more towing shops spread out all around here than their are Police Stations. I see tow trucks as often as LOE's. Yet you keep driving around with that heavy, gas robbing, space hogging THING in your trunk. Any more stupid questions?

Or maybe just , Why, are you going to rob me?

Sorry, that's the educated donkey showing up again.

If it's someone who's opinion of me I don't value, if I won't see them again, or if I'm just plain feeling testy my answer to "Why do you have a gun?" is "In case I need to shoot someone, duh." That usually ends that line of conversation right there

Otherwise, my answer's along the fire extinguisher/spare tire route, and that I love my family (and myself) and want to protect them. If that's not enough (it always has been), then I'd go into Libertarian beliefs and being responsible for yourself and your actions.

A while back someone asked me why I needed a gun, a little different maybe, but along the same lines. I said, "...to defend myself and my family. What would you do if someone broke into your house while you and your family was there?" He was on the spot in front of his wife, and lamely replied something about his golf club. I asked him if he practiced self-defense with his golf club. He said, "How about them Braves this year?"

I've gotten this question several times including from my wife who is very much anti-gun and anti-CCW though only out of irrational uneducated fear having had zero experiences with a firearm, refuses to even look at or learn about one, and is from a town that is generally anti-gun within MA. I find this ironic though as at the same time they are all very proud of MA history including it's part with the fight for independence which was as I recall fought & won at the business end of a gun.

Anyway I tell her and people (just a handful of friends & family know I carry or even own guns) that I CCW for the same reason that I keep fire & smoke and CO alarms in my home in multiples and have more than the minimum required in state code. Additionally for the same reason that I keep two fire extinguishers on every floor of my century plus old home on all four stories as well as two in the basement near the boiler & laundry rooms. The same reason I carry auto insurance far beyond the state minimums as well as life, health, dental & disability insurances, a living will, as well as an umbrella liability policy in addition to home insurance along with riders toward jewelry and specific other valuables.
Its the same reason I keep a map of the region (W.MA) and national road atlas in the trunks of all three of our cars along with a large can of liquid tire inflator & road flares as well as minimum five dollars in loose variable denomination change in the cointrays.
The same reason that upon purchase I changed and upgraded all of the numerous exterior door locks including adding deadbolts where missing and had them all master keyed. Same reason I have always kept a large breed intimidating dog as a family pet. Same reason I keep an accurate tire gauge and check air pressures visually every time I approach a car to drive away in and check/adjust pressures via the gauge every 90 days or so. The same reason I keep smoke hoods for us all in the event of fire when at home or on travel.
Same reason I never leave home without my drivers license (ID), house key, atleast one credit card and if possible proof of health insurance card too. Same reason I always keep the car with atleast a 1/4 tank though preferably a half tank or more of fuel, always wear my seatbelt and have racing harnesses installed in my autocross toy.

For my wife to bring it home I told her it's no different than how she keeps in her truck an umbrella in case of rany days, a box of baby wipes for general purpose 'accidents', and a spare pair of shoes & clothes for our 3 yr. old.
Sometimes it rains, other days it pours and every once in a while others we play or stay with may spill things on us. Not everyday does this or things happen but they do occur and often enough that it's almost stupid to ignore that fact and not make relatively simple & easy preperations toward the unwanted.

Mrs. Janq still has her fears but better understands my mentality to some degree, although she often refers to me snakily as "Safety Sam".
I'd rather my moniker be 'Safety Sam' than Dead Daddy, and besides atleast for me carrying defense tools is second nature I've been doing it for decades now since my mom first gave me a small folding knife when I was 8 then showed me how to use it to defend myself while living in our neighborhood which was a section 8 housing ghetto of the worst kind. I grew up in DC & P.G. County MD from 1970 into the mid 90's and have been mugged at gun point, shot at several times, attacked with bats, knives, a tree limb, and stabbed in the upper back with a pencil upon being jumped at a public bus stop with friends five on three, and at age 9 came home from school to find my next door neighbors apt. door wide open and he laying in his entry way with what used ot be his skull flattened and his blood all over the walls and floor. My parents didn't allow me to give a report and played like we knew nothing though later came to find out via the community grapevine that the guy owed a loan shark money.

Crap happens and most often when it does it stinks.
My wife knows nothing about such things in life and if I have my way she won't nor will my kids.

I have decided to use the recent event of Detroit's 911 system and ask if they could stand being raped for 3 or so hours. Before that I would tell them because police are historians, not crime stoppers.
