    Another sheeple argument

Something I thought I'd share, kind of amusing moment at work today.

I work in a beer distributor in Pennsylvania. My bosses love the fact that I carry (they actually asked me if I did in my interview), so I'm more than happy to do so on a daily basis in the workplace.

One part of my job is explaining PA's stupid beer and liquor laws to out of towners (new yorkers, folks from jersey, ohio, and everywhere else), and I sometimes end my 200x per day speech with "PA has the worst beer laws, but some of the best gun laws". For whatever reason, this really ticked off an old man from NY today.

"I don't like guns," he says. That's fine.
"Nobody needs them." Whuhahuh? Hold the phone.

"Why do you say that, sir?" I ask. "They're dangerous! Too many people getting killed today. I like New York's laws. No one should need a gun."

    Oh. Man.

"Well, in my short time on earth (I never ever try to sound like I'm talking down to my elders, I always let them know I'm completely aware of my lack of total life experience) I have already seen some crazy stuff go down, and the presence of a firearm has definitely had a direct impact on keeping myself and my family safe. I mean, if you were ever in a situation like that, wouldn't you say guns have their place, at least sometimes?"

"I don't know about that (about what?), I've never known anyone to need a gun for any reason." (Of course you don't, no one who obeys the law in new york city even has one)

So I reply with my favorite line to explain why I carry a gun for self defense, or like guns, or generally enjoy the presence of guns. "Well, sir, no one you know has ever needed a gun. And no one was ever a victim of a violent crime, until they were. I flatly refuse to be a victim."

He shook his head, and walked out. I grinned and sat back down, happy to know that I'll never feel helpless if some idiot tries to rob my store. I can only wish some people could feel so secure.

Head down to the closest farm in your area. Ask the farmer if you can go directly into the pen. Discuss firearms with them...you'll get much farther with them then you will with that other guy.

There is something I learned a long time ago, and that is is someone wants to be wrong that badly, it's better to let them.

The odds are he may never need a gun. That guy probably lives in a nice community with police patrols going down his street every couple of hours.

The rest of us live in the real world were bad guys abound and police patrols are few and far between.

If the guy is from NYC, his opinion doesn't counthe has Mayor Loonburg protecting him

Well put Jmac00! But you need to add Albany, Newburg, and I'm sure a lot of other cities to the same list as NYC.

I grew up in the Imperial State of New York, and if you did not know the county judge personally, getting a 'pistol permit' was about as easy as winning the lottery.

Now, living in KY has brought me incredible freedom with respect to firearms, but even more so is added responsiblilty!

Calling someone a "sheeple" because they choose not to carry for SD is really not constructive. I understand "antis" and their opinions and I find they often lack basic knowledge of history and are weak on logic in the case of firearms ownership and use.

However, someone may choose not to carry. It's a personal choice. You made yours. They made theirs.

Looking down your nose at them actually makes you look smaller.

The second half of the "logic" such as it is, is that if you have a gun it makes the situation worse. So even if he does get robbed, he'll make the assumption that a gun would have been taken from him and used to shoot him. If he gets shot, he'll assume that adding his own gun to the mix would have resulted in the dreaded "crossfire" and led to bystanders getting shot.

He may not even live in a nice area. Many people in bad areas associate guns with crime. It's simple association -- if you show a dog a gun before you beat it, it'll become afraid of guns. Same way with people who don't think a whole lot.

some people don't live in the real world and that's sad. thankfully this guy has "never" had any reason to own one, but until his time comes that he needs one his mindset will change. hopefully you or another sheep dog is around to save his butt. O well you did great!

That's one of great things about this country, we have a lot more choices than most.

He has made his choices, to live in NY and not carry - and he will live and/or die with the consequences of those choices.

I am also an old codger. In my 71 years I have never been in a situation where I needed a gun, nor do I know anyone personally that has been in that situation - even so, I carry 24/7/365 and live in gun friendly VA - my choices - and I'll live and/or die by them!

Ain't Liberty great? Hope we get to keep it a bit longer...

Jameso, The next time you run onto a New Yorker, and they start in with that " why do you, or I never " crap. Just ask them if they remember the Long Island Railroad massacre?

    That usually shuts them up.

I agree and posted something similar on the Forum about a year ago. Did not find many members in agreement with me then, and that probably has not changed much since.

Well thats a double edged sword, I really dont see people going out of there way to tell people just how wrong they are for not carring a weapon. I see people discussing the reasons why they carry.

However I do see people very strongly telling others how wrong and dangerous it is to own and to carry a weapon.

I tend to think that they are the ones looking down their noses, not us.
