I have a trip coming up to Russia. Any suggestions as far as what legal "items" I can take for protection?
I know I will be SEVERELY limited in what I can take on the plane...any ideas on what is allowed in Carry on and then in Russia? Or where I might find out what I am allowed to carry in Russia?
Pepper spray, wand...?

Vodka and Trojans. Can't help ya on if you can carry over there, but I doubt it very seriously.

You won't be able to carry any defensive products in your carry-on and any that the TSA finds in your checked luggage will get confiscated for an international flight.
My advice: contact the US Embassy in Russia once you're there and see if you have any options while in that country. Likely that they'll tell you no and that it's not worth the risk from a legal standpoint.
How about contacting the Russian Embassy in the U.S. BEFORE you even pack?
Be very polite, know when someone is hitting you up for a bribe and be sure to have some American Dollars or Euros on hand to pay them.
You don't want trouble in Russia. You really don't.
Our concept of "rights" and "law" is very different from what is over their.

No way to protect me and my family means we aren't going!! Plain and simple. I agree with what has been said already, don't have anything that you aren't suppose to and stay out of bars and other bad areas. Good luck, I hope you have a good trip.

I haven't been there in 30 years so my info is going to be rather dated. I don't think you can take anything that will be of any real use to you. Expect to have your luggage search by the Russian Customs guys. It does help if you speak some of the language.
Now if you're going to go with Sixto's idea you'll want to pick up this.

Why take things with you? Stop by a hardware store you can pickup a whole lot things. You cannot find small can of bug spray to double as a can of mace? Box cutter, wooden dowel, awl, road flares, flair gun, toilet cleaner and ammonia. plumbing pipe. Give me 45 minutes in the store and I could hold back a small army for a while.
How about a supermarket? All the cleaning products. Toothbrushes, Razor blades, disposable lighters, Lighter fluid, potato peeler, sharpie marker, List goes on.
You could also hire a private security firm
Carry your passport in a separate pocket from your wallet...and that in a separate pocket than your cash. Expect problems from local police. Most see tourists as an easy paycheck.
Hopefully you have someone you can travel with that is from Russia. It helps to have a local to protect you.
As far as carry items go, nothing. When customs searches your bag, they will confiscate the items AND most likely detain you.
Contact the embassy and ask for advice on travel.
