Discussion with my Dr. about "One Bad Apple"

Yesterday I had an appointment with my doctor who is in a very well known Cardiology group in Germantown, TN.

At the end of my exam I asked her why they had a "No Guns" sign on the outside door of the clinic. This was my 2nd appointment with her and like the 1st time, I disarmed before entering the building. On this visit I explained to her I was licensed to carry and was disappointed that I had to disarm when coming to her office. She said she understood and thanked me for leaving my handgun in the car.

She explained the sign went up a couple of years ago after an incident involving a patient who had a TN handgun carry permit, was armed, and brandished his weapon after getting frustrated with his lengthy wait to see his doctor. She said the police were called and the man was disarmed and escorted out of the building by a few Germantown Police SWAT officers.

This was very frustrating to hear that an irrational HCP holder was responsible for the loss of my and other legal carriers' rights in this facility. Fortunately I only have to see her 2 times a year.

Forming an opinion about something based on the behavior of one idiot is called 'prejudice'.

So if someone starts carrying because they were a victim of a crime, their carrying is based on 'prejudice'?

    I don't think so...

I understand their decision, based upon the incident...I may not agree with it, but it's their property, so I can respect that...

^^ Although it does make the facility's decision to ban guns on premises a little more understandable. Not smart, per se, but understandable. If a bear came *that* close to mauling you as a small child, you may grow up not wanting to be around bears again, even trained bears (or perhaps even with a solid barrier between you and the bear).
Sucks when one stupid guy ruins it for everyone else though...

Like it or not, as the number of CCW permitees increases, the number of idiots with a ccw license will increase. This in turn is guaranteed to eventually cause some high-profile cases of ccw holders doing very bad things. That in turn will create political pressure to restrict ccw permits. Where we'll end up I don't know, but around and around we will go...

I see where you are coming from and I think you make a good point. In my own mind, I carry out of principle and not any one personal experience. But you are correct.

I can understand the docs postion, don't agree, but I can see her side of the issue. Would be a non-issue here, as SC does not permit CC in doctors offices or hospitals.

So when the next "bad apple" shows up and begins shooting people, who's going to stop him?

With the same mentality I worry about some “idiot” who has a CCL opening fire in a mall to stop a purse snatcher and killing an innocent bystander.

The outcome could change public opinion, and get legislatures to terminate civilian CCL in that state, and then it could spread across the nation like wildfire.

Bad situation, though ultimately "bad apples" won't pay attention to the sign that was posted. I guess the sign would give some a warm and fuzzy feeling, but how has it really helped?

Too bad about some idiot, using poor judgment, and ruined it for others, but there are no guarantees that idiots don't exist in all walks of life.
Turn the election's in 2014 to a "2A Revolution". It will serve as a 1994 refresher not to "infringe" on our Second Amendment. We know who they are now.........SEND 'EM HOME. Our success in this will be proportional to how hard we work to make it happen.

Did you verify this with local records? Sounds like the doctor had a canned response story for the sign.

Maybe next time ask the good Dr. would she be willing to remove the sign? Give CCW'ers a second chance. Maybe offer her a free trip to the range sometime.

By default you dont have the ability to carry but if you have permission from whoever is in charge of the facility you can carry in hospitals (good luck pulling that one off) or in a doctors office (much easier if it is a small office).
