Question regarding state of Maine no gun signs

Does anyone know if Maine has a law regarding no gun signs? Is it against the law to carry in a marked place marked with a sign or do they have no legal standing?

I'm not sure but I would imagine you can go to the Maine State Police web site and go to the Concealed Weapon page to get more info.

I know this is a couple months old but here is the answer:

    Title 17-A: MAINE CRIMINAL CODE
    Part 2: SUBSTANTIVE OFFENSES
    Chapter 43: WEAPONS
    1057.
    1. A person is guilty of criminal possession of a firearm if:
    A. ...(excluding LEO jargon removed) the person possesses any firearm on the premises of a licensed establishment posted to prohibit or restrict the possession of firearms in a manner reasonably likely to come to the attention of patrons, in violation of the posted prohibition or restriction; or [1989, c. 917, 2 (NEW).]

    ..

    3. It is not a defense to a prosecution under subsection 1 that the person holds a permit to carry a concealed firearm issued under Title 25, chapter 252.

TL;DR: If they post a sign you need to honor it.

I have seen VERY few of these signs here in Maine. It is at a hospital and I respect the wishes of the hospital. Otherwise, it seems to me that everywhere else (except schools, churches, federal property, ect.) I have yet to see any mention. I also dont carry where alcohol is served. I live with the philosophy that guns and booze dont mix at all.

    Licensed Establishment

No guns signs only have the force of law in Maine if they are conspicuously posted in a licensed establishment. However, the term "licensed establishment" refers to places licensed for on premises consumption of alcohol, and nothing else. I don't recall ever seeing a "no guns" sign at any bar in Maine

With that said, you can be asked to leave private property for almost any reason at all, and if you don't do so, you are trespassing, but you wouldn't be breaking any guns laws that I am aware of.

Just took a law course on cc and basically guns are a no go in any federal building, office, or even a floor that has a federal office on it but only that floor. However the sign has to be posted clearly. If it is not posted or not posted in a place likely to be seen before entering the premises then it's not valid. For example if a bar is a no carry establishment but the sign is above the bar then you can't be charged as you couldn't see it before entering the place.

However remember that the amendments (like 2A) are only protections of the citizenry from the government private companies/residences are not required to follow the amendments (though there are other laws that they can be compelled to follow e.g. federal/state discrimination laws which often parallel some amendments).

Tl;dr. If someone owns property/land and clearly forbids you from carrying there then they can.

    (Unless I'm wrong :p)
