In my experiences, I have used two approaches.
1) Must Notify States = The first words out of my mouth are, "Officer, I need to notify you that I have a permit to carry and that I am legally carrying a firearm at this time."
2) Other States = Less structured and somewhat depending on the situation.
a) Sidearm is still holstered & concealed = "Officer, for both of our safety and peace of mind I think you ought to know that have a permit to carry and that I am legally carrying a firearm at this time."
b) Sidearm was deployed = I followed the LEO's orders -- quickly.
In no case have I (or would I) say any version of "I have a gun."

Well done all around, this is how it SHOULD go on both sides :)
I would not have had the type of restraint you exhibited though. Faster than I could clamp my hand over my mouth, I would have excitedly squealed "Cool! Can I see it?"
Don't frisk me, I am the weapon.

To clarify, he notified me by handing me his CCW permit along with his license, and stating (when he saw me look at the permit) that he was carrying at the time.
I will remember to mention DC in the future... How did I let that slip!?

usmc3169, how do you and "most" of your fellow LEOs feel about AK carry law? Do you find it putting you on more of an edge knowing that so many carry without holding a permit? Do not get me wrong, I think VA and AK are correct in the way they are doing things and think our entire country needs to follow. I just want to know what affect it has on LEOs. Have you worked in other states and find it to be a different "feel" day-to-day? If we have any VA LEOs, please feel free to speak up as well. Thank you for your protection.
