It will all become ingrained before too very long.
"For the first time I was about to be legal to carry in more than just my property and my car and I forgot to even grab my gun"
In Michigan we are required to inform LEO's. They are even allowed to ask us to remove the weapon while they are making a traffic stop, for their safety. I don't have a problem with this. I was considering doing the same thing you were, putting the license in the holster. Then I realized that if the LEO wanted to see the license I would have to reach for the gun to get it. I decided that might make a LEO nervous so I switched to a front pocket carried money clip, card holder for my license and keep it on the opposite side of where I carry my gun.
You will only do that once.
Congrats on the new permit, MO is now a little safer!

At least you had a place to go. I got mine on Thursday and haven't had much of a reason to leave the house yet.

I believe prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance should have REMAINED in schools, and the Ten Commandments should have REMAINED in schools, courthouses, and everywhere else it was before the ACLU got involved.
