I can tell you, as a Firearms Instructor for my agency, that a large percentage of our folks are not "gun people". Certainly, many of them have no idea what the manual of arms is for any handgun other than the one we issue them. We do have a lot of former military members who at least have a basic familiarity. When we have our quarterly ranges, I try to give my guys a few hundred rounds of practice ammo to take with them. Quite a few refuse it. Imagine that!?!? Turning down free ammo! Ugh...

On the other hand, quite a few of my guys/gals are excellent shooters; practice plenty on their own; and appreciate any private citizen who chooses to arm themselves and take some responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their community. Like any agency, it is a mixed bag. As a Firearms Instructor, you do what you can, not only to teach them to shoot, fight, and survive, but also how to deal with people in general. But, no matter how hard you try and how thoroughly you teach/train, you cannot force people to learn.

Sounds like all went well, && I would have done the same thing.
