That is already part of the four rules of safe gun ownership.

1: Always treat a gun as if it's loaded, no matter how many times you've cleared it.
2: Never place your finger inside the trigger guard unless you are intending to pull it.
3: Never allow your gun's muzzle to be aimed at anything you don't intend to shoot.
4: Always know what's behind your target.

Is there a specific reason you brought up the trigger rule?

    Never leave home without it!

Yes, because it's the most abused rule.

Don't carry without a leather holster... keep them coming.

I don't think that's a rule. I use kydex, and it works, in my opinion, better than leather.

The thing about "defense" is that it has practically nothing to do with guns. (As passed on by CCW9MM)

Stay out of harm's way in the first place as much as possible: while I may need to take a family member to the hospital in an emergency, I choose NOT to be a pizza guy in the bad part of town.

Concealed carry rule: Concealed means concealed.

    Main Entry: con·ceal
    Pronunciation: \kən-ˈsēl\
    Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Middle English concelen, from Anglo-French conceler, from Latin concelare, from com- + celare to hide — more at hell
    Date: 14th century

1 : to prevent disclosure or recognition of <conceal the truth>
2 : to place out of sight <concealed himself behind the door>
    synonyms see hide

    — con·ceal·able \-ˈsē-lə-bəl\ adjective

    — con·ceal·ing·ly \-ˈsē-liŋ-lē\ adverb

    — con·ceal·ment \-ˈsē(ə)l-mənt\ noun

Source - Conceal - Definition and More from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary
I state this as both an item of daily wear function as well as safety.

    Why?

Because of the once a month or so news story of Jane Blow-CCW being busted at Fill 'N Theblank plaza store exposing or even showing her gun as she rifles through her purse for money to pay, or a cellphone.

Because of the people who by statement on gunfu web forums don't give two cares about the law and/or public view of guns and will walk around wearing guns under sheer white practically transparent shirts...Or the guys who wear form fitting shirts over top of guns that obviously in shape are clear as day...Or the people who wear what they erroneously deem before leaving the house as 'cover' that rides at just below the belt line so when they go to the store and reach up to grab something off a shelf or bend over to pickup a dropped set of keys everyone as to their side and rear can see nothing but gun, and are revolted same as those of us who might unwantingly be witness to plumber crack or muffin top type inappropriate fit clothing malfunctions.

As well on the safety side there are the people who for what ever odd reason just have a strong undeniable uncontrollable _desire_ to 'show' to darn near ANYONE who even remotely brings up the subject matter of 'gun' to run with that 6th grade kid style and whip out their own gun as holstered on hip...Like their Glock 20 or XD40 is the first ever seen by mankind and emits stun phaser beams...Just like Kirk's.
Also once a month to this end there is some news story, including just 48 hrs. ago as posted here, of some fool and they include LEOs as well as civilians who fall into the show me yours and I'll show you mine mode only to wind up with BANG!...Oh what just happened results.
Keep it in yer pants! The old I'm just gonna take a look at it method results too often in unintended/unexpected consequences, just like teen pregnancy. Pop goes the weasel and the weasel goes POP!

If you are going to carry a firearm and by that represent not just yourself but that of your states legislature who pushed, hard or in many state cases VERY hard, to allow citizen carry then you had better act like a professional rather than an amateur. Plain and simple.
You may not care about how you represent yourself. But the results of your actions (which includes inaction which itself as a choice is an action) as a concealed carry person does directly affect the rest of us as by view and compiled data stats per the people who hate our freedoms and wish to control and limit if not outright deny them altogether.

There is an old saying among we city bred folk; 'Act like you know'.

Concealed as by definition means nobody is to know.

Not by showing them or telling them, and time to figure out how to drop a deuce while carrying is not as while in a Starbucks AND actually carrying to begin experimentation with different possible methods to handle/manipulate the firearm as while seated.
Seriously...Come the heck on, what kind of impression does this make on the general public as toward the rest of us?! This is not a rare occurrence, anymore, either.

If they want to see your gun, show them a picture. Treat it like the Samurai with their swords- if it comes out of the holster anywhere but the range or the safe, it better be drawing blood.

    Always carry, never tell.

I get the idea but the imagery tends to feed the sheep dog myth (and other delusions of grandeur) that many permit holders seem to be infested W/.

A good holster is your best friend.

Good being defined as comfortable, stable, concealable...etc
