Frangible ammo for a handgun, if at all possible, go with a shorty shotgun hidden under the counter. The shotgun would be the best option, but that will depend on how your store is set up.

In many cases kneeling may help. This makes you a smaller target (but unfortunately doesn't allow easy movement).
If the BG shoots and misses you his/her shots will go into the floor.
It also means your shots will go in an upward trajectory. The upward trajectory may be a safer one than a flatter trajectory which may endanger others at the same height as the BG.
This of course depends on whether or not there are floors higher than the one you are on. In which case people on the upper floor(s) could be in danger of a stray bullet if you are kneeling.

Bullet Resistant Paneling
There are quite a few commercial options out there for reinforcing walls and kiosks. Put the paneling in your till area and you have cover to be behind.
Just a thought if you are really worried about it.

There is also the thought of changing the line/angle of fire. Most people think in terms of how they shoot at a range. Standing, and firing at a near level trajectory.
Getting low and shooting up drastically reduces the chance of a miss (which will probably happen) from hitting anyone, unless your shopping area is on a ground floor of a 2 story building.

1/4" steel plate is not too expensive and can provide good cover from all except rifle rouonds.Steel line the walls and put in tile floors for easy clean-up...
bleach mixed 1 part to 10 parts water is a good cleanup solution.

Umm, what type of business? Arrangement of the shop may offer some options, whether with some creative use of shelving, bookshelves full of books, etc.

I once was fixing a copying machine for a check cashing store. When I went behind the counter I saw a sawed off shotgun mounted so that the muzzle would blast anyone standing in front of the register. It was hooked up to a hidden foot peddle as I recall. Of course this was in Detroit so I couldn't fault the ingenuity of this business owner at all.

Your #1 goal is to survive so using cover is the only real choice. Worry about backstops and lawyers when people aren't trying to kill you. Take your time now, while you can and figure out a solution.

Are you sure that the drywall is not covering up cinderblock? In most states commercial buildings have to have firewalls. Every stripmall I have seen built recently has cinderblock walls in between each rental unit.
