So I have been researching the laws in Westchester County NY for a while until I realized, I actually live just over the border in Putnam County (I recently moved about 15 minutes away, and thought I was still in Westchester), where CCW laws are less ridiculous. Has anyone hear gone through the process in Putnam, and if so, can you walk me through the best way to go about doing so?

Judge Reitz WILL issue unrestricted licenses IF you ask for it. He's not sending out notices to come get it, but it's common knowledge around these parts that the "restricted" days are over for those who already have a license. I've only heard of 1 person(whom I know personally) who was not upgraded out of 700 or so. New applicants will still get a restricted license for some time period, but will upgrade at some time, and honestly don't know when.
The judge was elected with the help of a local gun club, and he lived up to his promise to ease the burden. Regarding the Sheriff, I've hear conflicting reports over the years. Seems the scuttlebutt was that the Sheriff was blaming the judges and the judges were blaming the Sheriff for denying the rights of residents. Hard to determine the truth there. I will say the sheriff has been to all of the local Friends of the NRA dinners and has been nothing but helpful and understanding of gun owners needs in the community. The sheriff has in fact donated items to be raffled at the dinners. And I've never heard a negative comment, regarding gun ownership, coming from his mouth.

Thank you very much SIG. I assume from your numerous locations, you're in the military?
I am quite thankful I'm not in Westchester. Although it's quite nice, the gun laws bother me and I don't feel like dealing with illegal guns, or anyone who would sell an illegal gun. I heard once that you must be 21 to buy a handgun from an FFL dealer, but you can be 18 through a private transaction. Is this true?
You need a NYS permit (age 21) to purchase a handgun in NYS no matter who you buy it from.
