Glad to hear you're giving it a chance I carry my Glock 27 every single day with one in the pipe... as long as you are careful just like you said, nothing is ever going to happen.

OP, get some training ASAP. Familiarize yourself with your weapon. Know how it operates and how to use it. If you aren't confident enough wearing a charged handgun next to your body, what happens when you have to use/manipulate it under stress to defend you or any one else?
As others have said, there is nothing to fear when you keep your finger out of the trigger guard. In fact, your finger IS the safety.
